What the heck is wrong with Square-enix?

Postby Rockman » Thu Sep 22, 2011 6:24 pm

Yeah I'll add another thread to the already long list of complaints about them lately, but I just don't understand their motivation.

Final Fantasy XIII did not trend as they expected it to.

So what do they do to follow up, give us more Final Fantasy XIII games (I heard they were making a 3 as well)

Also their first MMORPG wasn't a huge success so they rush out a new one and it flops.

Why would they do this when they have a goldmine available with a new Kingdom Hearts game for console, or remakes of games that would actually benefit more from a graphical upgrade?

Again another no-brainer.

"Hey guys we have all these games that are universally loved and demanded what should we do"

"More XIII games, only this time the combat will be so simple you only have to hit X when it flashes on the screen"

"Brilliant!"

They stopped making good games, fell way way way too in love with cut scenes and a specific aesthetic, and started to believe that great graphics are why people play the games instead of compelling stories and fun gameplay.

Nah. Slime Mori Mori 3 looks like great fun. And they better bring that to the US! :x

They're making Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, due next year.

I have no faith in square any more. I'd take story and gameplay over graphics any day.

That's why Suikoden 2 will forever be the greatest RPG ever created to me.

Guess you should stop playing games now then. :P

So no interest in Genso Suikoden: The Woven Web of a Century (Genso Suikoden Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki)?

After 2...no I'll give it after 3...the series has gone bad, imo

I don't mind that Final Fantasy XIV was another MMORPG. I played the beta for about ten minutes (I got in very late) and it was kind of fun. It looked like it solved the problem of the first game (which was fighting in a whole lot of desert followed by more desert and maybe a barren landscape or two to make things interesting). I'd be trying to tap into the WoW market too, if I were them.

I don't think FFXIV was the game to do it, though. They still didn't seem to understand how to make their game interesting online. It was basically a graphic upgrade of XI with better starting locations.

XIII is really unexcusable. It was basically Square-Enix throwing their hands in the air and saying "we don't know what we're doing anymore." EVERY character in that game is from a previous game. Every story point has already been told better in other games. It was flat, generic, and was something we'd already played just with prettier graphics.

And then there's Star Ocean. That game came out around the same time and is your basic who's who of what pisses me off about Japanese Role Playing Games. Star Ocean pandered to every Anime/ Manga/ Videogame trope I can think of. Such a generic cast of characters wearing outlandish costumes and spouting generic story points in a ridiculous fashion.

I tried out Star Ocean again just a few weeks ago because I had forgotten just how nail-scratching-on-chalkboard bad it was. My wife got mad that I was giving that game a second go (I gave it the benefit of the doubt and played it for an hour or two before finally giving it up).

So, yeah, I'm thinking my time with Square, which was once a beautiful thing, is over. I can't see myself running out and buying the next FF game on opening day like I've done with all the rest (except XIV).

I guess it's cause I never got into Square with the FF games. I was an arcade gamer at that point.

I'm pretty happy with their Slime Rocket and Dragon Quest. Plus stuff like Itadaki Street looks fun.
