Character Spotlight: Kid Loki

Postby LOLtron » Thu Sep 22, 2011 10:37 am

Read about one of the Outhousers' favorite characters in the weekly Character Spotlight! This week, we look at Marvel Comics' Kid Loki!

In an Internet filled with overwhelming negativity and pointless hatred of frivolous stuff, it's sometimes necessary to take a step back, take a deep breath and remember why we enjoy comics in the first place. Character Spotlight is a weekly feature showcasing some of the Outhouse's favorite characters that epitomize why we read comics. Maybe you'll learn something, maybe you won't, but regardless we hope you enjoy the Outhouse's Character Spotlight!

Origin Story:
Complicated.  Loki has died and been reborn a number of times over the years.  During the Siege of Asgard, Loki struck multiple deals with some high power players to free his soul from the afterlife and give him a chance to break out of the rut he'd gotten into (more on that rut later).  When he died in the final battle against the Sentry/Void, Loki spent about five seconds being dead before Thor resurrected him.

Instead of returning to the world as an adult, this new Loki came back as a kid living in Paris, France.  Despite that fact, he was still likeable... even though he was involved in a scam to pick-pocket people when Thor caught up with him.  Loki was given back his god-status but only had a partial memory recall... and a whole lot of guilt.

It's like looking into a mirror.

Character Appeal:
You know how the original Loki is a complete villain?  How you know from the moment he appears that he's going to screw you out of everything you love in life?  Yep.  Everyone did.  The original Loki realized that everyone knew he was a mustache twirling villain and decided to rectify the matter.  The newer, younger Loki isn't a bad guy.  In fact, he uses his trickery for what he thinks are good reasons.  It's this play against expectation that REALLY works.

He also gets a bump from the recent movie appearance.  The movie Loki had nuances and motives that made him the breakout character from the Thor movie.  While movie Loki fell into the "bad guy" category, his plans unfolded brilliantly and you can totally understand why he did what he did.

Kid Loki is still a master of mischief.  He's still untrusted in Asgard and anywhere else he goes.  The big difference is that he's not trying to screw you.  He might even be trying to help you.  Adding to that appeal is a small expectation on our part that he MIGHT, just might, return to his villainous ways.

Playa, play on.

Top storylines:
The best thing about Spotlighting a new character is that you don't have to go far to get all of his appearances.  You can get Loki's resurrection in the World Eaters story arc (Thor #615-621--Loki return in #617).  Kid Loki also makes appearances in the new Thor title, currently on it's fifth issue, and Fear Itself.

What you REALLY want, though, is Kid Loki's solo series, Journey Into Mystery.  He takes over the title starting with the current Fear Itself tie-in story (JIM #622-626-- it's still going on).  This is where the character of the new Loki is really allowed to shine as he travels all over the place, trying to save Earth, Asgard, and everything in between.  It's been one of the best things to come out of the Fear Itself event.

Learning about the birds and the bees.

Kid Loki Can Even Beat Superman:
Now THIS would be a challenge for our young trickster god.  He's had some success at manipulating creatures much more powerful than himself, so it's possible that he could get Superman to walk right into a Kryptonite-lined room, especially if he used himself as bait.  C'mon.  He looks like an innocent little kid when he's in civies instead of his traditional Loki-gear.

Everyone needs a faithful steed.

Where the character is today:
Riding the wave that is Fear Itself.  With the recent Thor push, expect Loki to remain a player in comics for the foreseeable future.  Journey Into Mystery, in particular, looks like it has some legs to it.  Loki's actions lead into some sort of fallout post-Fear Itself.  With any luck, we'll be seeing Loki's misadventures for quite a while.  Hopefully, Marvel won't just return him to type.

Cultural differences.

I've said it before and I will keep saying it: Keiron Gillen gets Thor and the Asgardians a heck of a lot better than Matt Fraction does.

Does anyone know if Journey into Mystery is going to stay Loki-focused after Fear Itself or if it is going to revert to Thor again?

I have yet to claim to be an Asgardian god.
