El Topo : BOHemian painter

Postby eltopo » Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:06 am

so Friday night I got all drunk on Natty boh,Saranac pumpkin ale (best pumpkin ale I've had btw) and Jim Beam black. somehow I got into a conversation with my roomate about abstract painting (he paints in that style) he thought it'd be a good idea if I tried my hand at it so he gave me a bunch of paint and and a bunch of tools (no brushes) like screwdrivers, knives and other odd metal things and he sent me into the garage (which is his De-facto studio). So I'm in the garage, doors open, shirtless blasting heavy metal till like 4 am. I'm litterally putting paint on knives and what not scraping away at the canvas my neighbors must have thought I was a goddamn maniac killer. so below is the end result I have no idea if it's any good but I have to say it was a lot of fun making it
the canvas is pretty large and the garage pretty small so I couldn't get it all in frame

I'd have to see it in person to get a feel for it. I can't paint very well when I'm drunk. If I have a slight buzz, that's good, but if I'm drunk I'm useless.

Cool, very visceral work :-D
It would be great if you can mix both your styles, clean one-stroke drawing and this savage style :D

I'm in the same boat as you. I just bought a projector from Michaels. Some art tracer jr. for 25 bucks I used the half off coupon.

So with that said, if you want to do this.. you need a projector, get a white conte stick or oil pastel or chalk...and make the room really dark.

then project your image on to your painting surface, out line the important parts of your image with the white stick, noting hi=lights etc, contours etc. Then go to paint.

That was middle of the road...they have an even cheaper one, but you get what you pay for...the high end one was what 199, or. 299.

I like the painting, Tope.

They are great, though. You wouldn't even have to project your drawing---just cut out the actual photo you are referencing and project THAT onto the canvas. Then outline it like you were doing your drawing, and then paint it.

Print on a transparent slide and project it with a flashlight.
Seriously, i've done it!
