Mortal Kombat Reboot

New Line Reboots ‘Mortal Kombat’

New Line Cinema is bringing back Mortal Kombat, setting up a live-action reboot of the martial arts-heavy franchise that will be written by Oren Uziel and directed by Kevin Tancharoen. The director wouldn’t be the first guy one would think of for a chopsocky action film given a resume that includes Fame and, most recently, Glee: The Documentary, the 3D concert movie that didn’t do much business this summer. But both of those guys have earned the work, since it was their unauthorized viral short that breathed life into a dormant franchise.

Interesting. I'm curious to see what he'll be able to do with an actual big budget behind him.

well seeing as how the stuff they have done has been the best interpretation of MK, i'm all for a reboot. In all honesty i hope they take the cast they already have in MK: Legacy and just take it to the big screen

I was hoping the youtube episodes would be close to that original pilot idea they had, removing the mystical stuff, etc. But I believe producers got on them and started making them include all that. But I will say, the Scorpion vs Sub Zero episodes were top notch and I loved the Raiden episode.

Without the mystical stuff, it ain't Mortal Kombat.

You don't have to.

But Shao Khan and Goro and Scorpion ain't just some dudes from around the block who are a little too eccentric, maybe. And Raiden ain't just a guy with a god complex and a fetish for funny hats. And I've never seen anybody do kung-fu so hard that they shoot fire and transform into a dragon.

Mortal Kombat is firmly rooted in the mystical. If you divorce it from that, you may as well call it something else that doesn't rely upon the conspicuous absence of the letter "C".

Understandable, but that pilot they had showed a direction where the mysticism wasn't necessary for the vision they had. I'm all for the magic realm, etc, but I was very interested in seeing that direction they were heading. I was looking forward to Baraka they had but was disappointed when they went to the video game version of Baraka when the Mileena/Kitana episode came about.
