why not just use Excel to create a database?

BASIL is the most popular one for booksellers and independent bookshops, but it's not free.

Because whilst it's something that needs doing, cataloging via an Exel spreadsheet would take forever. I'd rather use a program (like Book Collectorz, which is expensive, sadly) which can match a book to its ISBN number and download the details from the net, thereby creating a browseable database.

There are free apps for smartphones, I think, where you may be able to scan ISBNs into a database.

I use mybookdroid on my phone. Real easy scan and I can share it with my goodreads account.

It's for android phones, though...

I use the Collectorz.com programs, but they are not free. I have a lot of media, and these programs give me a ton of flexibility, and I can keep the info on my phone.
