"The Magicians" optioned for TV

Postby LOLtron » Thu Oct 06, 2011 2:34 am

The writers of X-men: First Class and co-writers of Thor are adapting Lev Grossman's The Magician into a TV Show script for Fox.

The Magician has been a well reviews fantasy novel and is often referred to as Harry Potter for adults.  Fox plans to turn it into a drama series adaptation, with a script commitment plus penalty.

It will be written by X-Men: First Class and Thor co-writers Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz and produced by Michael London (Milk), Shawn Levy and Michael Adelstein.

A short synopsis from wikipedia:
"The Magicians is a fantasy novel by Lev Grossman, published in 2009 by Viking Press. It tells the story of Quentin Coldwater, a teenager in Brooklyn who discovers that the magical world of which he's read in books is, in fact, real."

Although it's not a sure thing, Fox has only purchased it as an option.  A pilot will probably get filmed, but in the world of TV it's hard to tell whether it will get picked up as a series or not.

I have the book, but have yet to read it (hope to soon).
I'm always a little hesitant when I see 'well reviewed' books by newspapers and magazines and tend to trust the group of reviewers I follow online more closely.
It did get fair reviews throughout most of those. But not everything I've read was glowing. I think telling people "Harry Potter for Adults" is setting some up for disappointment.

I want to read more stuff by The Grossman Brothers. I've liked everything I've seen from them so far, but it's a small sample size. I don't usually go for genre stuff in my prose reading (except for crime), but it seems like their stuff would work well for me.
The witness said Mr Brown then called out to Ms Hay's adult daughter: "Look at this, I'm tittie-f***ing your mother!".

They seem to have quite an artistic family. All I've read was Soon I Will Be Invincible, by his brother.

I agree. I had to be sold on picking up the sequel, but I'm glad I did.

You're welcome :).

The sequel was much better - as far as I could tell, the pacing problems were fixed.

Side note, OMG YES AND I HOPE THIS DOESN'T SUCK BECAUSE I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Ok, got that out of my system.

I'm always hesitant when Fox is developing something that sounds good.

Might try this book when I get a chance.
