Warner Bros. Greenlights Akira

Postby LOLtron » Thu Oct 20, 2011 9:06 am

Warner Bros. Greenlights Akira

It's official.  The long-rumored remake of the classic anime is coming to the big screen.

Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. has greenlit a remake of the cult classic Akira.  While director Jaume Collet-Serra has been attached to the project since July, the entertainment conglomorate (and parent company of comics publisher DC) finally gave the project the go-ahead.  WB previously purchased the movie rights from manga publisher Kodansha in 2008.

Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund is rumored to be the frontrunner for the male lead of the movie, which will follow the futuristic anime's plot of a biker gang leader fighting to save his friend from government experiments due to the latter's newly discovered psychokinetic abilities.

The studio is aiming to begin filming in February or March 2012,

Pyrotechnic? Nothing about this film is Akira. Not even thinking about watching this.

Is there much interest in a live action version of this film?
I doubt they'll go anywhere near the level of violence that the original film did, so will the effect be the same?
Some men just want to watch the world burn.

It's white people, including hero 'Travis', in New Manhattan fighting an evil corporation to save a pyrokenetic.

That's a typo on my part. Lousy autocorrect.

It's supposed to be psychokinetic.

They should rename this "99%", imo.

I was testing out the iPad to see if it could post articles.

The good news is that it can. The bad news is that Steve Jobs' ghost likes to change the words to piss people off.

You would. It's not Akira though.

Eh, whatever. If its good, its good. If it sucks, it sucks.

That its a remake is irrelevant.

The original wont sudddenly disappear because of this.

Unclench.

I totally would.

What? I don't take Akira that seriously. I loved the anime, but not so much that I mind it being completely reimagined.

You throw a bunch of Japanese actors in there and there is no way anyone in the US would watch that film except the diehards, and then they'd still bitch about it. Only way to pull off a "true" adaptation is to get a director with a name that draws, like a Cameron or a Fincher or a Bay, and I don't think that's happening.

So relax a little. There's the manga, and the anime (which still stands up to today's standards). I doubt a live action would top the anime anyway, no matter how true to the story it is.

They should rename it. It's like Aeon Flux. Other than the names (which Akira isn't even bothering with), it had nothing to do with the show or the character. The names, characters, motivations, locations, everything but the title is being changed. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah, it's called Hollywood.

They fucked up the Transformers, by putting the emphasis on like 30 different human characters that were all there for comic relief apparently.

They fucked up the Green Hornet.

They fucked up Star Wars.

The list is endless.
