I wish NotRama hadn't shut down the OldRama archive. I could show how bat$#!t some posters were in their claims bringing back the "real" Legion would return the book back to the top of the sales charts.

Not as far as I can tell. They apparently went away with the board.

I remember reading those books in a barbershop when I was a kid. In comparison they were done far better than the books today. There was a great deal of editorial freedom to form their own vision of the future, which at the time was pretty cool.

Considering that Weisinger nixed Shooter's wishes to have Ferro Lad and Shadow Lass be black characters, I have to take that phrase with a little grain of salt.

That said, DC and Levitz would do well to not have so many connections to the modern DCnU as the neo-Classic Legion did post-Final Crisis.

I have no idea what any of this means. There was certainly more editorial freedom in that era for that comic compared to your Superman, Batman et cetera. The fact is when you read a Legion comic from that time you never knew what you were going to get, which made it more fun and that was my point, no salt required.

I've always considered Shadow Lass to be a blue character.

Well the fans who created her intended for her to be black.

What happened was that Legion fans and would-be comic book writers George Vincent and Mike Rickford came up with two characters that they thought would be good Legionnaires, Chemical King and Shadow Lass.

Both characters ended up being used in the Adult Legionnaire issue.

(Chemical King’s would later be shown in Adventure Comics #371).

However, Vincent and Rickford had a much different origin in mind for Shadow Lass. She was intended to be black, from an all-black planet colonized from black people from Earth who left Earth due to racial strife.

Weisinger thought that the idea was way too controversial, but he said he liked the character and would try to work her in in a different fashion.

It means that Weisinger (the editor for the Legion, as well as the Superman books) ixnayed at least one of Shooter's ideas.

Oh look, the Island Marzal where Tyroc came from.

I like when artists have drawn her face to look like she could be Indian or middle eastern. The elf ears were nice too.

That's what I thought too. Tyroc was post Weisinger, anyhow.

That was one of the better things when Giffen redesigned Shady back in '82. It gave her a more exotic, modern (for the time) look.

Might not have liked her not in the classic swimsuit. But it was a more conservative time in America. At least Giffen managed to make it seem more elegant (back when he could draw).

Sorry, but I think you're wrong on that. Considering that the same time, we got the first T&A comics along with nudity, it had nothing to do with conservative times as it wasn't. More so given tv shows, films and music, the era was as liberal as prior and following. Her costume got changed like that because Perez decided to do that as it was too easy not to stick her in a body stoking with a bit of cleavage window. Giffen used it for much the same reason Timberwolf's costume became more simple as did a few others. Also, in general, the hippy nudey sci fi trend was over and Star Trek pajamas style was in.

I like her Reboot costume the best, even if it is basically Ms Marvel's with a cape and bracelets.

I recall Shady's costume having been colored darker in the stomach area for several issues in the early Legion series run before Giffen came around. I thought it had as much to do with the climate of the times (the early 80's) than for any other reason.

Look again, it wasn't coloured any darker. All that happened was that after Grell left, artists drew the bikini with more cloth. Like I said, you're wrong on that. An ear where punk rock came into the mainstream along with new wave, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna was not a conservative time. Ronny was in the White House, but other then the politics, it was not a conservative era. Sometimes, artists simplify costume designs to make them easier to draw. Wally Wood kept altering Power Girl's costume in the 70s because he couldn't be bothered with trying to draw the cape rope under her arm. The belt was another story.
