Gonna be wordy, but it's what happens when I get on a tirade.
Since I was a little boy, I’ve always been a fan of the Avengers. Ever since I was playing Captain America and the Avengers on the Sega Genesis, I have enjoyed reading the exploits of Hawkeye, Vision, Iron Man and of course Captain America. But this… this is just bad.
Let’s start with the cover… could it be any more generic? The team running into unknown battle with artwork that feels quite amateur. And just look at Iron Man and Ms. Marvel; they look like window decals instead of super heroes. I just would have expected more care and effort for Marvel’s most powerful superhero team.
The artwork, although a far cry better than the Leifeld of yesteryear, almost tried too hard to feel nostalgic, when instead it just seems cheap and lazy. Even the voice bubbles; Vision’s is completely different, but everyone else’s is the same, common white. And since every dialogue, regardless of how trite, fires back and forth making it almost impossible about the order of speech and who is talking to whom.
The use of characters just seems… odd. I personally am all for downplaying the Wolverine since I feel as though Marvel has been, let’s say over-exaggerating how awesome he is for the last few years or so. But to have a splash page of Storm as an intro than have her almost neglected after Vision’s re-emergence is nearly insulting to women, or any fans of Storm in general. They spend time boosting black Panther, even giving him near top billing on the cover, only to have him reject in a teaser now to probably have him join later. And does anyone really care about Red Hulk? I appreciate the nostalgia attempt, but come on.
This is what I get for having hopes, I suppose. 5.5 out of 10
