Nightfly's TV Week in Review 11/27/11 - Supernatural, Bored to Death, and more!

Postby LOLtron » Mon Dec 05, 2011 4:25 pm

Nightfly lists his preferred picks from primetime TV and the world of entertainment.

TV Week in Review  (week of 11/27/11)

This past week turned out to be a surprisingly competitive one, unexpected, as a number of series are on break or airing repeats for the holidays. The CW network dominates this entry, not just by taking my Top of the List drama spot, but also by being the only network to earn more than a single slot on my hour-long list. CBS, as it's done a time or two before, again stands as the sole hour-long honoree from the so-called Big Three. Star Wars: The Clone Wars was almost unseated in my Favorite Teen Shows section by an extra-entertaining episode of Victorious. That same, Secret Santa themed, Victorious episode is the only teen show honoree to simultaneously place on my Outstanding Sitcoms list this week as well. Though not taking either of the top two slots, the Disney Channel deserves congrats for owning the remaining three of my five teen show spots for last week. HBO's Bored to Death season finale lands on the top of my sitcoms list this time but only NBC and MTV garner multiple spots on that super-amusing list. History Channel's UFO oriented programming dominates my reality category again, though this time for Brad Meltzer's Decoded, making a bold claim on my Reality Shows' Top of the List slot with its debut appearance in my WIR column.
I expected to post episode three of Spellfury's second season as my honored Webisode of the Week, but it appears that it won't be released until next week at the soonest. In the meantime, I hope you'll find this edition's webseries otherwise entertaining.
Tomorrow (Tues 12/6) make sure not to miss three special Christmas episodes from Syfy's Eureka, Warehouse 13, and airing its first holiday special ever, Haven. I'll be publishing interviews with the stars of all three shows tomorrow (if I can finish 'em in time) at TVOM.
Now onto my favorite picks from last week...

Despite several shows remaining off the air last week I still managed to up my total viewing hours to forty-three and a half, twenty of which were for hour-long series alone. Sadly, I missed last week's House, Prophets of Sci-fi (focusing on Arthur C. Clarke) and Disney's 90min holiday special, Good Luck Charlie, It's Christmas! I'll be making it a priority to catch replays of all three as soon as possible.
Of the twenty hour-long dramas caught I found Dexter, Once Upon a Time, Psych, Burn Notice, and the mid-season premiere of Leverage to be extremely close contenders for my main list - each turning in excellent episodes that'd surely place in even a slightly less competitive week.
Good Luck Charlie, Shake It Up, Raising Hope, Whitney, and the third season premiere of Hot in Cleveland all deserve honorable mentions in my Outstanding Sitcoms section, with, The Simpsons being the only Teen Shows bench rider this time out.
Regarding reality shows just missing my list, Curiosity, Project Accessory, Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, Bomb Patrol: Afghanistan and All on the Line bear that particular distinction.
Rounding out my complete top ten list of favorite guest stars last week are Colin Hanks (on Dexter), Tony Curran (on Covert Affairs), Jere Burns (on Burn Notice), Leigh Allyn Baker (on So Random!), Devon Sawa (on Nikita), and Roselyn Sanchez (on Rizzoli & Isles).

Though Psych didn't make my column's hour-long scripted list this week, guest star William Shatner earned runner-up status and made it a pleasure to honor my ongoing pledge to always feature Psych when new episodes air. It did make my top ten (out of twenty) and, as mentioned already, this was a highly competitive week.

Personally, as a big fan of the original series in my youth, I'm seriously looking forward to TNT's relaunch of the drama series, Dallas. Last week they released a new sneak peek trailer including cast interviews. Watch the clip and read details about it here.

Last Wednesday Disney released a new trailer for the eagerly awaited sci-fi epic, John Carter (in theaters 3/9/2012). Read more about the upcoming film and check out its new trailer here.

I found a bunch of stickers at GetGlue last week for upcoming TV shows, films, and comic books. In the comic book department I found glue for Marvel's First Family, Fear Itself: The Fearless, and Battle Scars. For movies, I noticed new Coming Soon stickers for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (opening 12/9), The Sitter (also opening 12/9), and, The Darkest Hour (opening Christmas day). TV Series premiering tonight (12/5) that you can still probably get Coming Soon glue for include The Mortified Sessions and The Young Turks with Cenk Uygur. There are two stickers available this week for the Hallmark Channel's original movie, Annie Claus Is Coming To Town, starring Maria Thayer (Eagleheart) as Santa's ginger daughter, Annie (premiering 12/10). You can also grab Coming Soon glue for HBO's The Life And Times Of Tim (season premiere 12/16) and Jane By Design, a new series debuting January 3rd on ABC-Family.

Before closing out this WiR installment I invite you to view a decidely engaging clip featuring a pair of lovely ladies. Should you accept my invitation you'll be treated to a kickass scene in which Paula Patton and Lea Seydoux catfight in a sneak peek from Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Enjoy the action! (below)

Thank you very much for checking out my week in review columns here and you can also find my Syfy Christmas interviews, scheduled to be published tomorrow, at TV Over Mind. Enjoy this week of holiday programming and, as always, Be Well & Happy Viewing!

I liked the Juliet flashback on Psych cause it opens the possibility of a Lassie flashback. I thought Juliet's dad would figure out Shawn was faking.
I also liked the Ken mention. :)

TNT also has a movie premiering on Tuesday that I'm gonna check out.

Congrats avengingtitan!! New Girl & Good Luck Charlie are Correct! You've successfully earned your 19th medal - w00t!! ImageThanks for playing. :)
* I was worried the inclusion of a teen show might cause problems (hehe).

I'd say it's a safe bet Eureka will at least make my list. I really dug all three Syfy X-mas specials but Eureka really took it to the next level.

I assumed it was her so I had to google it. :-D

Yea I've only seen the one x-mas episode but damn it was good. That might be the first time I remember seeing all 3 kids together.

I've been pretty meh on Eureka as of late but this was awesome. I saw it first thinking it would be the weakest but I loved it. I haven't seen the others yet.

Many confuse her with Amber Riley from Glee. :|
I think you're right about the kids.

Sninjas!

I was able to download screeners for all three Syfy specials and Eureka's was by far the most unfinished. Even with missing and temporary efx I was very impressed with it. Bear McCreary, who scored the episode, tweeted and has since blogged about including numerous nods to genre music classics in the music for "Do You See What I See." A lot of love and hard work went into making it.

If anyone hasn't seen 'em yet, here are my Q&A write-ups for each show;
Eureka
Haven
Warehouse 13
