That is how it is in the book.
In the movie, it is not filmed that way. Long camera shots of them starting at each other, holding hands, and what not. Very awkard causing giggles in the audience.
The credit for the good things in the movie is mostly Tolkiens.
Though Jackson shot a credible movie in terms of effects (90% of the time) and took it seriously, he made narrative and character changes that help mess up what Tolkien achieved.
the best movie of the three is the first one.
the second one is a bit of a mess and the third one is just messed up with the 45 minute endings.
