Well this has been an interesting topic and debate fellas. So the question is...Where do we all go from here?

Who's doing what?
which what?
where that's at?
How?

I'm going to do a few warm up comics. Then I'm going to research submission guidelines from companies that have produced work that I'd want to be in company with. That's my plan A.

Yours?

I'm not really looking at the moment.

But that's the deal, you are either my employee or my partner, take it or leave it.

Eventually, someone would take it.

I'm going to write my script in the next month, mostly just for practice (teaching is great, but I need to keep the skills going). In the summer, I might make it a screenplay instead.

Why is that relevant? If I'm paying the person, that's what matters.

It's like selling a screenplay. Screenwriters don't get royalties.

Like I said, you better be giving good pagerates.

You seem to completely discount the amount of time it takes to craft a page, and you probably think $20 a page is a lot. :-D

Why are you being a dick about this?

I'm just having a conversation.

And trust me, I know more about this stuff than you think I do.

How is what I said being a dick?

I said you better be giving good page rates if you expect an artist to work on an unpublished concept with no guarantees of a return.

Think about the amount of time (months) it would take to put together a concept and draw one issue. And you're going to tell an artist that you'll pay him for the art, but he/she gets nothing beyond that. Well, then the page rate better be really good.

Sorry. It seemed like all your responses were bordering on sarcastic. I apologize if that wasn't the case.

As far as paying, I would definitely pay generously for both pay rates and concept designs. I know that this person is doing work for me and I wouldn't shortchange them, but there would also be a contract stating that they have no rights after they have been paid. They are just work-for-hire.

So one month from now eh?

I think that's a good target date to see how people are progressing with their own adventures.

I'll shoot for the same.

I don't have much of a choice. Either I'm done before the next semester starts or I'm too swamped.

Meanwhile, Contramundi, I checked your blog and I think your pages are good. You should get into The Gathering and have your stories published, it's a small indy imprint but it's better than nothing, and so far a few pros have collaborated with us (Gail Simone, Sterling Gates, Sean McKeever, etc.). You could have your story right next to the story of someone famous, how about that?

the gathering?never heard of it,can i post a link to my blog there?if you ever need something i can work something out,i just need an excuse to draw really lol,i know i need to improve but i would like a taste of something serious,an indie stint or something

anyway,if anybody needs a penciler post or pm a request,im not very tech savvy but ill work something out

I know my flaws in my writing, my dyslexia gets in the way. I can tell a great story but cannot write it if that makes sense.

I would love to find someone to play off of, like DnA.

As for paying, what pay does the writer get? He gets something and I work for nada?

I would prefer to collaborate and do a 50/50 split, but I might bite the bullet and pay someone to do the art.

It depends on what you want (color, black and white, lettering, etc.). Most of "my guys" can do everything from top to bottom. The problem is, I couldn't tell you their "non-me" rates as I've worked with a lot of them for years and I'm sure they give me a discount they wouldn't give to anyone else. Paul Houston (http://www.renderwrx.net/) and Randy Valiente (http://randyvaliente.deviantart.com/) are my go-to guys. Just tell 'em Jeremiah sent you. Randy's doing a lot of work for Zenescope on the Grimm Fairy Tales books right now and Paul produces a magazine.

Doc Spider wrote:But let's be honest here, it's a whole lot easier to write "splash page with Superman and Darkseid punching each other" than to draw it...

Except good writers don't "just" write such a simple blurb and move. Maybe writers who, you know, actually communicate with their artists on the phone or in person or e-mail or somewhere outside of the script do because there are other places to exchange ideas, but surely no professional.
