Action Comics #5 (Reckon I found me a spaceman Spoilers)

Postby Punchy » Sun Jan 08, 2012 2:27 pm

I’m conflicted about this one. I really liked the stuff where Morrison was retelling the Superman origin. Yes, we’ve seen it all a million bazillion times before, but it was very well done and Morrison added several interesting new wrinkles to it, like Krypto being trapped in the Phantom Zone or the Kents using a deformed calf as a fake alien, that it didn’t feel too repetitive. The other stuff however, the time-travel stuff… that just seemed unnecessary to me and rather confusing, why is Superman showing up in his modern day costume here? This book needs to stick with the jeans and t-shirt look for a while longer, and to have him in his proper duds confuses things. And then there’s the Legion! I would have much preferred this to just be a retelling of the origin, without the time-travel stuff. The art was great from Kubert throughout, and the back-up from Fisch was also good, but it did make me annoyed that Ma and Pa Kent are dead in the new continuity.

DC really should have made Morrison use the neo-classic Legion instead of letting him create yet another version, They just got done with Lo3W a few years back, and now Morrison muddies the Legion continuity waters again.

First of all: STFU about the Legion, this is Action Comics

Secondly: How do you know this isn't the *neo-classic* Legion? A different costume doesn't mean a different continuity, this story is about time-travel, they could be the same Legion from earlier, or later in time. Hell, Superman is wearing a different costume in this issue than he is in #4, but it's not a different continuity is it? You're jumping to massive conclusions.

The previews suggest that this Legion is different from the neo-classic one.

1:200 B&W Variant cover by ANDY KUBERT
On sale FEBRUARY 1 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Combo pack edition: $4.99 US
This issue will ship with three covers. See the order form for more information.
The breakneck pace of Grant Morrison’s run on ACTION COMICS continues as the Superman of the present day must team up with suspiciously different versions of the Legion of Super-Heroes to save the jeans-wearing Superman of five years ago! Whose hand is that on the cover? Why, the leader of the Anti-Superman Army, of course!
Plus, a backup by Sholly Fisch and ChrisCross that spins directly out of the lead story!
This issue is also offered as a special combo pack edition, polybagged with a redemption code for a digital download of the issue.

It does imply that this might not be the Legion currently roaming around the 31st century.

as i said in your stupid legion thread nacireman, they have made a point to say that the current legion that is operating in the current Legion book CAN'T access time travel since the Flashpoint event, part of the reason the Legion members in Legion Lost are trapped in the modern era. the current universe that is depicted in the dc books (outside of Legion) are a different universe then the one the legion from legion of superheroes is from. It makes perfect sense for there to be a new legion of superheroes for the New 52.

The point is that if there's something awry with this Legion (and solicits are very often full of inaccuracies, so there's no guarantee there will be) we will see an in-story reason for it. And while it may make Nac cry salty tears and curse up a redacted storm at DC, Time-Warner, Paul Levitz and possibly the entire Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the rest of us will just read the issue and either like it or not. No sense having an embolism over it.

From a business point it makes zero sense.

DC spent a lot of time, effort, and money to (re)introduce a version of the Legion that would appeal (so they thought) to long time fans of the team, while putting the other version that was appearing in its own book at the time in the mothballs, seemingly forever.

Logically, DC should be using the neo-classic team in x-overs. Which would promote the team outside the LSH book and hopefully introduce the team to non-Legion fans.

Instead, DC has introduced yet another version of the Legion in Action. Thus creating confusion among readers once again and undermining the success of the current Legion book. And I mean success in the financial sense of the term, as DC is (in theory) a for-profit company.

Christ Nacireman shut up about the fucking legion. You're making me hate a group I actually like. Jesus Christ no one cares.

Anyway this was an okay book but it makes me hate DC for killing ma and pa. I used to love the issues where Clark would come home and see them after a big fight or just for advice. Without them he's become a hipster douche and theres nothing worse then that. Oh well it was still a good issue.
