The only time I have liked a Bendis-written Avengers in the last few years was when Deodato was the artist. He seems to bring out the best in Bendis, this was no exception.
Ok, the issue wasn't perfect. I'll get to the stupidity later, but I really enjoyed the Avengers actually fighting for once and not talking about it. I liked Luke Cage getting his ass handed to him. I really used to like Luke Cage but hate him now. I hate that he leads the Avengers and I hate Wolverine saying "we can't win this fight without him." Really? Luke Cage is that important? And please don't tell me it's because the Dark Avengers have a Hulk, because Wolverine doesn't back down from the real Hulk.
The battle was really well done. I enjoyed Spider-Man kicking some ass (though I could've done without another bad breath joke). Bendis really does respect Spidey's character. Same with Daredevil. I liked Daredevil barking out some orders. It was cool to see him in that role.
So a good knockdown, bare knuckles brawl between heroes and villains to start off the issue. What could go wrong?
Well the ending was stupid. The Avengers retreated. In other words, they lost, again. This team has more losses than the Shocker. And it wasn't a tactical retreat. They weren't going to return to the fight. They ran. That annoys me. These characters would all die before they let villains escape. That really pissed me off. What they did was pull a villain move by creating an illusion to trick the Dark Avengers. Lame. Also, if Osborn's team could beat them, why not have Clor with him in the battle instead of sicking him on the Avengers at the end of the issue?
So like I said, it was fun to actually see the Avengers do something and the art was great, but Bendis pulled back from making this a truly great issue.
7/10
