Fact - I so want to read a good Avengers book. It's been almost eight years since the Bendis hi-jack and with only a few spots in that time (Slott & Gage's stuff) there hasn't been anything Avengery about the Avengers imo. With Bendis not involved in this Secret Avengers book I gladly took a look. Anyways... (spoilers) Summary: Cap and Hawkeye go on a mission/test. Hawkeye fails and the two argue and Cap ends up fucking up and Hawkeye rescues him. The whole 'point one' thing is intended to draw in new readers right? Didn't work. Hawkeye and Cap bickering the way they do doesn't work for me in the slightest. For Cap to question Clint's leadership is absurd. I'll give Remender credit for having Clint take off after the insult. The climax of the book proves without a doubt how effective Hawkeye is (taking down the entirety of the new Masters of Evil in a single page). It feels like they are forcing Hawkeye into the Ultimate version when there's nothing wrong with Brer' Hawkeye. What's the deal with them jumping of of skyscrapers? Impossible heights in free fall and a flag pole is enough to save Cap after what seems like 50 stories? Well, it is a comic book and let's say it's okay for them. But it certainly isn't for the jet-sled guys that have to drop to their deaths. Again - not Avengery. The 1st skyfall, and train roof ride to get to the party was was one thing - but why? If they had image inducers, why didn't they just walk in? Why risk death or being spotted jumping off a building from a half mile up? Silly stuff (oh yeah - walking in doesn't make for a cool action scene regardless how nonsensical it is). And how did Hawkeye find the Fury Jr's lair? Did I miss an explanation? The art was good, but the coloring wasn't. The thirty shades of flesh color was distracting. I appreciate when colorist 'paint' but this was overdone (Cap at the party looks like he has a rash on half his face). Well, I tried Secret Avengers and there is enough things that work (the pencil art, and some characterization) but it felt hollow. Maybe because with it only having Cap & Hawkeye in it, this book was more Team-Up than Avengers. Writing - 5 Art - 5 (without the coloring it would have been an ![]() Overall - 5 |

and I hate to steal Punchy's shtick but the best line is easily,"His stomach is filled with McRbis and hot apple pies." 5 because in the end this book really is just average. |

![]() I fucking love the Cap/Hawkeye dynamic, and it was on full display this issue. I look forward to the Cap team-up book for that reason alone. But that aside, this was good stuff. Always love when the Shadow Council pops up. I don't get the hate. It was a nice little prelude to Remender's proper run. I can't wait for #22, with the full team.. it just might be my favorite Avengers roster in a very, very, very, very long time. Art: 7 Story: 7 Total: 7/10 |
