Ed Brubaker has always been a Review Group favourite, and we all know how cool Bucky is, I'm expecting big things here people!

Amoebas has next week's pick

Comics are to be scored on a scale from 1-10. 1 being suck, 10 being a damn good comic. Your review must be at least a paragraph to show you've put some effort in, but beyond that, there's no right or wrong, unless you disagree with me :P

Hmmm - what to pick for next week?

To Gail Simone or not to Gail Simone, that is the question.

Good Christ, my LCS is worse than Stephen's. It didn't have Winter Soldier.

Now, I have to make the extra trip to the good store. Urrrrr.

So much good stuff in this issue. Especially liked the sudden appearance of a Russian machine gun toting gorilla shouting "Death to America!!!" in Russian

It's off to a good start, but there's obviously no way the cliffhanger plays out as described. We shall see.

I loved the artwork, it was just dirty enough to set the tone for the beginning of this series beautifully, yet it was still clean enough that the storytelling was never muddled. As for the story itself, it was good. The Soviet sleeper agents coming out of hiding plot isn't exactly the newest sort of story out there, but Brubaker presents things in an interesting way that prevents the natural cliches from overwhelming the story.

Absolutely fantastic comic book. The art was very pretty to look at while at the same time being, as Stephen put it, "dirty." If you had told me 10 years ago that Captain America would be one of the best books (now a family of books) on the stand and a ressurected Bucky Barnes would be one of Marvel's most compelling characters, I would have called you a Newton, but here we are, and it's the truth. I'll keep reading this as long as Brubaker keeps writing it, but the art makes it an extra special treat.

This issue was pretty good, I liked how it was uber-serious and realistic up until the end when the gorilla showed up.

I think it was pretty campy the whole way through, but the characters played it seriously, as they should.

This felt like the "Cap #1-25" Bru.. I think I have a new favorite book at Marvel, after only one issue! This is seriously better than anything Cap-related that Brubaker has written in years. Albeit, only one issue.. but still. And Butch Guice knocked it out of the damn park. I think this might be the best I've seen from him in a very, very long time. Can't actually remember a better outing, for that matter. A perfect blend of dark and gritty, but also some beautiful close up panels. His Black Widow is great.

Winter Soldier #1

I know next to nothing about this guy that Bucky became and Bru did a great job filling in those gaps (not that I'm convinced Bucky should ever have been resurrected).

But questions remain. Cap spent ages getting comfortable to 1964, yet Bucky seems to get the modern world instantly. The Black Widow - she knew about Bucky being alive and never mentioned this to Cap or anyone else? This was a WTF moment that drew me right out of the book.

Once I was able to get back into it the book we got a another bed post notch for Natasha, Commie Gorillas, the Red Ghost and Dr Doom. What started as a cool cold war spy story switched gears rather quickly into typical super-hero/villain fare. (Commie Gorillas are nothing new to Marvel but a 'Talking' Commie Gorilla reminded me too much of DC's Talking Nazi Gorilla (who's also a vampire).

And my hats off to Butch Guice. Sometimes he's off his game - not here. Great stuff and a HUGE thank you to him for showing the other Marvel artists that the Black Widow can be extremely sexy without having her breasts pushing the bounderies of a zipper at the navel costume!

Story - (8 for the start + 2 for the end) 5
Art - 9

Overall - 7
