25 Years Ago Today...

Postby nietoperz » Sun Feb 05, 2012 2:21 pm

...#1 of the Giffen / DeMatteis Justice League was released, according to DeMatteis himself on Twitter. I was 15 then, am 40 now and love it just as much if not more. Time really hasn't diminished this run.

So I thought we'd raise a metaphorical glass to one of the best, most entertaining and beloved runs of the past few decades! All together now:

I remember looking for issues in long piles of old comics for few money. Nowadays there is some newstands that still has them there.
To develop their conscience and consciousness, to make them aware of what is going on, to prepare the precarious ground for the future alternatives—this is our task: "our" not only as Marxists but as intellectuals, and that means all those who are still free and able to think by themselves and against indoctrination, communist as well as anticommunist.

One of the great moments in the history of comics! :-D I love how Canary spent the rest of the issue complaining she missed it.

Meanwhile, DC appears not to be printing any more collections after Vol 6 - this sucks for many reasons, not least because the last volume ended on a cliffhanger: they should at least have the decency to print the full story! Also, we'd just about arrived at one of the best arcs of the run: the return of Despero and the presumed death of Mister Miracle. I'm pretty fed up about this.

Great stuff indeed, though I only read it up through #25 because that's all I could find.

one of the all-time greats. Capt. Marvel intro'ing J'onn to Chocos, Kooey Kooey Kooey, One punch!!!, G'Nort, L-Ron, PG's cat, and on and on...so much good stuff came out of that initial idea to add the I to the JL. multiple re-reads do nothing to dull its gloriousness. still one of my faves.

I see we're continuing with the "overrated" meme?
Some men just want to watch the world burn.

It's good stuff, but it's not on the level that fanboys have inflated.
It was good for its time, and was good in its time, but isn't the definitive Justice League.

I love humor in my comics, but the Keith/Giffen Justice League got a bit too silly after a while. The first couple of years, with the Grey Man, the mystery of Maxwell Lord, and all the Biayla (sp) stuff were top notch though.

They had a good balance in the early years, but you're right, the humor emphasis became so forced.

I certainly don't think that it's the best thing ever, or even close. It's just exactly what I want my comics to be, FUN!

I'm not saying that all comics should be slapstick. Serious books are good too, but I still want to have fun reading them.

One of the best runs in all of comics history.

I'll gladly raise my glass to Giffen, DeMatteis, Maguire, Templeton, Hughes and the rest! :smt030
