And yes, I know Pym (as Giant Man) and Wasp were in Ultimates, but it makes sense why they picked who they did.

most of the characters seem pretty different than they did in the ultimates.

I think the reason they are using Hawkeye and Black Widow is because the effects for them are a lot cheaper.
However, Liefeld is an enigma wrapped in a pouch-filled, muscular, footless conundrum.

Agreed.

What other non-powered prominent Avengers are there?

Black Panther would have been cool.

I think it makes sense to avoid Pym and Janet and the use of Pym particles. If SHEILD had access to that kind of thing, why would they need to recruit superheros? They could just give their agents the ability to shrink and grow.

I'm thinking that the choosing of Hawkeye and Widow goes back to what someone (Rdrs?) was saying about these movies being about characters first. Clint and Natasha (as opposed to Hawkeye and Widow) are just more immediately interesting than Hank and Jan, or Carol or Simon.
This is a crowded cast, so a lot of time can't be spent getting the audience to invest in the characters. The Second stringers need to be easy "reads."

Yeah, but incredibly complicated backstory.

And what would an African monarch really be doing on what is a US government assembled team (in the movie incarnation).

Slumming? Hanging out with a brother? :smt102

Actually they could have explained it as him being deposed or something, might even give a reason for a second movie.

Still between him and Hawkeye I'd still go with the Hawk.

I think that sounds pretty cool, some hints towards that would be great.

Hawkeye seems to be exactly the same as the Ultimates version.
The Avengers work for SHIELD.
The Hulk is used as a secret weapon not to get the team together.
Fury is black.
Stark seems more like Ultimate Stark IMO.

But I also agree that budget concerns were probably Hawkeye and Widow were chosen.

What "Avengers" bits have they taken, I have to admit it does seem very"ultimatey"

I suppose Cap is less of a dick.
