Please remember that Friedrich sued Sony Pictures, Columbia TriStar Motion Pictures, Relativity Media, Crystal Sky Pictures, Michael DeLuca Productions, Hasbro and Take-Two Interactive as well as Marvel.
He signed the rights to Marvel decades ago, and came with the litigation almost 30 years later when he smelled money after his alcoholism pretty much destroyed his career in comics.

Only if it was work for hire. If the artist in question owns the copyright, and has reserved all rights, then the family gets the money, or at least a portion in royalties. And properties don't have a time limit on how long they can make money. I think the current limit is adequate.
What limit? Every time the Disney properties get close to copyright expiration, they change the laws and double the copyright time. Chances are, most of the "properties" today will NEVER go into the public domain.

Just because I don't know how to spell the language of some tiny African nation doesn't mean that I'm wrong in thinking that your attitude towards women is 100% wrong. Obviously, you're some skinny, single nerd living on the East Coast who probably derives value in life from wrestling matches, hoping that Wolverine gets to sleep with teenagers and engaging in casual drug use. You're literally the worst thing to happen to comics since Stan Lee.

I hope this isn't the end and I hope all artists and independent creators finally rally together to voice their displeasure with the House of Mouse. I think it's time for some motherfuckin' Occupy The Mouse!
Unlikely, because most creators want to continue making money. Though, I'm sure there'll be quite the uproar on the inter... oh, people already stopped caring? Yeah, sounds about right in the age of the short attention span. After all, there's a new episode of the Voice on this week.

How about the creators like Mike Ploog whose material was being unlawfully reproduced and sold by Friedrich?

Comics are a dirty business.

That we've allowed copyright to keep being extended and halted the public domain at 1923 is a huge detriment to our shared culture, and ultimately I think it can lead to the loss of a lot of great works of art as anything not in the public domain but not profitable to the huge corporation that owns that copyright will simply sit in a vault forever.
I think your idea, from the perspective of the artist, that the artist can combat the hording and exploitation of ideas by corporations by creating new art is sound in theory, but the fact is few artists are prolific enough to produce a lot of great works of art. Most, I think, might produce one or two in a lifetime.
Damn it, Jude! Why do you have to go and say something that actually makes sense?
I must (reluctantly) agree with Jude in the lifetime copyright. Once the artist is dead, his work should be allowed to pass into public domain.

Or at least, you know, within a specified time afterward. It certainly shouldn't be extended indefinitely by corporations forever.

I believe it should just be a lifetime. I don't have kids but even if I did, I would prefer they make their own way in life rather than try and live off something I created.
