For the very first time.

I don't want to be negative but I have nothing positive to say about the first the episode.

I'm told that the show "grows a beard" during season 2 so I'm going to try and stick with it.

Okay one negative thing, Xander is the worst he's a terribly written character and that actor is horrible. It saddens me that he doesn't die in episode 2 (I know he's still around in the comic)

I had friends who liked that show but I could never get into it at all.

OK - as you've heard the show does not hit its stride until season two, but when it does you'll be hooked. And Nick Brendon will grow on you: Xander was never my favourite character, but without him it would have been a lesser show.

I plan on catching the whole shebang on netflix while I can. My friends who watched it during its first airing say they really liked the show up until she graduated from high school at which point they felt it should have ended. They do say that some of the best episodes come after her graduation, but as a whole it better pre.

I'm kind of surprised that the show got picked up based on the first episode though, maybe it was a time when they actually gave shows a chance to grow.

Looking back Buffy as a show didn't age well. The last season still is great however. Now angel I can watch that over and over even the not so stellar fourth season.

Yea the first season is a little slow but season two, as has been said, is where it gets really going.

Season 4's the best, IMO. You have Faith AND the Mayor AND the big school fight!

My sentiments as well.

To me, Buffy was the high schooler show.
Angel was the post high schooler/young adult show.

It was the dialogue. Buffy's (the show) would just grate on the nerves over time. Angel's doesn't or much in comparison to Buffy.
With Buffy, it came across as kids being smart ass and doing the "hip talk" of the era. Just does not work beyond then.

I'm re-re-re-re-watching it. I'm on season two. It does hit its stride in season two, but I've always had a soft spot for season one. Personally, I think it should have ended after season five.

True, there are some good episodes in seasons six and seven,

but the story of Buffy comes to a natural and heroic end with season five. On the whole I think it would have been better to end there.

I recall the whole "Master" plot was meh, but I liked the series as a whole so no hard feelings against season 1

I know the season after high school was supposed to be all about change and everything... but it just didn't work for me.

Also... if

Buffy's having money problems, why couldn't/wouldn't the Watcher's Council give her a stipend or a paycheck? She IS the Slayer, after all...
Any thoughts?
