John Carter-tracking horribly

Postby Spidey-Man » Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:50 pm

Hollywood is in a tizzy over the early tracking which just came online this morning for Walt Disney Studios‘ John Carter opening March 9th. “Not good. 2 unaided, 53 aware, 27 definitely interested, 3 first choice,” a senior exec at a rival studio emails me. Another writes me, ”It just came out. Women of all ages have flat out rejected the film. The tracking for John Carter is shocking for a film that cost over $250 million. This could be the biggest writeoff of all time.” I’m hearing figures in the neighborhood of $100 million.

http://www.deadline.com/2012/02/john-ca ... -all-time/

According to Deadline Hollywood, only 27% of those surveyed were “definitely interested” in seeing the film, with just 3% saying it was their “first choice” of upcoming films, a very low “wannasee” factor. Women of all ages appear to be very uninterested in the film, and, in spite of a Super Bowl ad (see “John Carter Super Bowl Ad”), just over half of all people surveyed (53%) were even aware of the movie at all.

Could this be the film that kills off the Edgar Rice Burroughs movie genre?

No, because Tarzan will always come back again and again.

I would really like to see it, because it looks very interesting, but there's too many other movies coming out that will take my $$$ first.

I'll still go see it.

The trailers have been moderately unappealing though.

Like what?

I have a fondness for the old ERB paperbacks and have owned a number of the first editions over the last several years. Still do, I think? Most of the more valuable ones were sold over a year ago before I realized the John Carter/Mars IP was going to be made into a film.

Anyway, so I may go see a matinee during the week and take a bottle of wine with me.

Well I do see listings for both 2012 and 2014 for Tarzan, but no other info is given.

Wasn't the last Tarzan the animated one from 1999?

Should have Dejah Thoris nekkid as in the books. That or g-string and pasties like in the comics.

That gibes with my thoughts on the property, that it's due for a return any day now.

They are getting better at telling the story. The Superbowl ad was vague and downright confusing about the story. I saw one on TV a week ago that was a bit better, and the trailer showing before Star Wars: Episode 1 was actually a decent summary/explanation of what's going on.

Yeah, the John Carter books haven't been in the public consciousness much since the 1970s, that's a long time and it's not something the younger generation of movie-goers has any familiarity with. That was my thought ever since I heard of this film announced.

I'm excited for the Hunger Games.
My kids want to see The Lorax (and so do I, honestly).

I guess that makes John Carter third on my list for March. There's a chance I may go, but not for sure.
