Anyway, if you go back and look at DC's post Crisis continuity, the 40s were Superman free and had heroes. It played out as mostly the same but with Green Lantern and The Flash as the biggest heroes and GL being the powerhouse. Robinson played on this in Golden Age.

DC AND Marvel are in a rut. IMO.

How are they in a rut?

They really can't seem to generate anything really new, characters or stories. Also, with these almost constant continuity changes/reboots... rut.

Are we talking about the same DC that gave us new characters like Bunker? You're obviously in the wrong here :P

When Bunker gets their own title that becomes the darling of both sales and fans, then yeah. More if the character is not a derivative one. :P

He's a Scott Lobdell creation, what else do you need to win over the fans?

Well, most fans don't support new chapters just ones with a 50+ year history.

And when they try something new with characters with long history, bitching ensues.

You are the rut.

what was the last new to DC or Marvel character that was embraced?
Winter soldier doesn't, IMO, count

X-23? - clone
Spider-Girl? - alternate history?
Runaways? - not successful post Vaughn
Manhunter? - not too many people
Damian?
Jessica Jones? - anyone but Bendis writer her?
Sentry? -
Hitman? - cult at best

Even new villains are generally hated

Deadpool and Cable, from a comics published standpoint, seem to be the newest characters that can be seen as successful. Maybe Gambit and Bishop

as a whole, comic book readers are apposed to new

Cassandra Cain is the answer. The last true character embraced by fans and still has a loyal fan base no matter how many times DC tries to ruin or stick the character in limbo. She had a long running series not canceled due to low sales but due to the company itself.

There was never a Cassandra Cain, Barbara Gordon is the one true Batgirl and went on a hiatus after The Killing Joke.

Maybe there's an "Earth 10" where the JLA consists of Wally, Kyle, and Donna in prominent roles. Just don't let Robinson write it.
