Ravi, now 19, faces up to 10 years in state prison if he is convicted on the multiple counts of invasion of privacy, witness tampering, hindering prosecution and bias intimidation.
He rejected a plea deal in December that would have allowed him to serve no jail time, but require him to perform 600 hours of community service and receive counseling. The state also assured Ravi, an Indian citizen, they would recommend to immigration officials that he not be deported.
...why would he reject that plea deal?

Its strange to me, looking at this article, that the difference between being a "vicious homophobe" and "dopey prankster" is ten years in prison.

Duh, I'm just saying his lawyer should have properly advised the dumbass that a ton of community service would keep him out of jail and not be deported.

Other than being a dick, his roommate didn't do anything criminal.
Case closed.

That's the problem with trying bullying cases in a public judicial system. It's not illegal to be an insensitive asshole. I feel for the bullied kid that committed suicide, but it's not like suicide was the only option at his disposal (shoving his violin up his roommate's ass would have crossed most people's minds first).
Do they honestly think the jerk roommate was wanting this guy to kill himself? And should he go to jail for this?

Because his lawyers think he can do better.
I mean seriously at worse what did he do? He spied on his roommate which is pretty disgusting, but that deserves ten years in prison and deportation from his lifetime home country?

multiple counts of invasion of privacy, witness tampering, hindering prosecution
are criminal acts, especially witness tampering, IMO

Didn't even seem like he was bullying the guy, he made jokes on twitter or whatever, which seems pretty normal now. To a lot of people it's no different than sitting around with some friends ands aying the same thing.

I agree that the maximum punishment doesn't fit the crime, but I have zero faith in our judicial system. I could see the jury box filled with mothers that want to send the rommate to prison to teach him a lesson (all the while not realizing that jerk is also someone's child).

but he allegedly commited the criminal act, in NJ, of invasion of privacy. WHat his intentions were are not what is at issue, what is at issue is what consequences his illegal actions had.
according to the prosecuters, if I am reading the articles correctly.

Well the Jury box is selected by the prosecuting and defending attourneys, and they both do their best to find people who won't be partial to their opposing arguments, so I imagine you won't have a bunch of moms with gay teens on the stand.
Obviously the prosecution might have some damning evidence, but more than likely the fact that they offered the plea to begin with is because they aren't confident that they can win.

remember he's NOT being tried for anything involved with the guy killing himself, its invasion of privacy, witness tampering, hindering prosecution and bias intimidation that's he's being tried on.
