Recommend a post-OMD Spider-man trade

Postby TimDrake'sDumbWings » Tue Feb 21, 2012 6:08 pm

I swear I'm not doing this to bait Zechs.

Could anybody recommend a post-OMD Spider-man trade? I'm not a very big Spider-man fan, though I did enjoy the "Death of Gwen Stacy" trade and David Michelinie's run. From the post-OMD stories, I've read and enjoyed New Ways to Die and the Zeb Wells/Chris Bachalo Mayan blizzard gods in a blizzard storyline.

Do you have any recommendations for recent Spider-man stories? What's your favorite post-OMD Spider-man arc?

The Gauntlet was pretty quality all the way through. My favorites were Shed and the Rhino story (volumes 5 and 2 respectively). Fearless readers has vol 1-3 of the gauntlet for cheap- http://www.fearlessreadersonline.com/graphicnovels.php?PageNumber=3&SearchNovels=spider-man

I can't. Because so far, I don't think there is a Spiderman story post-OMD that is worth a damn.

I hear a lot of praise for Spider Island. It seemed kind of gimmicky and strange to me (Like Jeph Loeb's "Hulked Out Heroes" bullshit), but it seems to be pretty well-liked. What did you enjoy about it?

It showed a different side to Peter. Once everybody had his powers, the story showed how unique he still was. Plus it has Spider-Fu which is just awesome on it's own.

Spider-Island
Whatever trade has the Rhino stories.
New Ways to Die

That's about it. Avoid Big Time, OMIT, and anything Doc Ock related. Those are the worst stories.

Oh, word. How was the Iron Fist/Shang Chi story? I almost picked that up because of my Iron Fist love.

The Iron Man/Shang Chi stuff was okay. Most of the tangential minis were the same. The meat of the story was in the Amazing Spider-Man issues.

And ignore Zechs (most of us do). OMIT is crap, but he just doesn't like Big Time because Roderick Kingsley got beheaded in it.

Gauntlet and New Ways to Die
and the Rhino stuff

once Ramos stayed on I had to drop the book, so I don't know after that

It had a weird, Silver Age high concept vibe that I appreciated and was still a great straight forward superhero story.

OK
no

if you liked New Ways to Die, i'd say pick up:
Character Assassination -- OK
American Son -- very good
Origin of the Species -- very good (Waid writing Spidey fighting everybody for control of the Osborn baby)

i'd also say Grim Hunt is actually pretty good too (even though the central plot point is blasphemous to me as a Spidey fan)

The Lizard and Rhino parts of the Gauntlet were good. I liked the Hammerhead story with Bachalo art, and the Paper Doll story from early on was very enjoyable.

Origin of the species was good, but I can't stand the artist. He makes everybody look like such tools with their baggy khaki shorts with golf shirt tucked in and dress belts, sweat socks and cross-trainers. And Peter's girlfriend is UGLY.

I wasn't a fan of Azaceta's Spidey art either. Never seemed to fit the book to me and made me miss Pulido or Martin- who also have seemingly throwback styles, but fit Spidey much, much better. I'd love to see Azaceta on something darker though.
