I was lucky enough to be able to pre-order a copy of the Collector's Edition for X-Box 360 and I am very excited for its release. I am really excited about the idea that I can actually choose how much story and action are in the game. As a whole, I enjoy playing these games for the choices and the story. There are hundreds of mindless action games out there, its refreshing to have something different.
However, there are a couple of things that I have heard that I bugging me. I don't like the fact that the amount of permanent squad members has been scaled down from Mass Effect 2. I went to the extra effort to save all of my crew, so the least that BioWare could do is reward those of us who accomplished this feat by giving us access to our entire crew. Of course, on the flip side of that, I don't like the fact that characters like Ashley/Kaiden and Liara are being forced back into scene. Liara became massively annoying during Mass Effect 2 (especially the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC) and the only interest that I have in Ashley is to tell her to piss off so that my Shepard can run off with Miranda.
I actually felt Liara and Ashely/Kaiden were forced
out of the second game, just so they could squeeze Miranda and Jacob and so forth in. The whole "working for Cerberus" thing was always contrived. I felt more of a connection to Liara than Miranda or even Jack, and I was pleased to see them pick up Liara's story with Lair of the Shadowbroker. The way they just put Liara in the corner was clumsy and ill-conceived.
Yeah, we'll change her entire focus, and turn her into a nascent crimelord, because that's often a fallback career for scientists and archaeologists. Oh, and instead of explaining it in-game, you'll have to read a comic book in order to find out what's going on with her.
Shit, Lair of the Shadowbroker should have been part of the main quest, even if Liara wasn't going to be available as a squad member. But whatever. They realized they'd left that thread dangling like a limp cock, and they dealt with it.
But I think we'll be seeing members of both squads in some role in the game. Like Mordin in the demo. He's not a squaddie, but he's still involved in the story.
Won't really miss Jacob or Thane if they're not around...will sorta miss Grunt, because he amused me. But I'm fine with Wrex being back. He was my boy.
It's also kind of interesting that the enemy types are being conceived along similar lines as the darkspawn in Dragon Age. Remember how the different types of Darkspawn were each based on a specific race? Like, the Hurlocks were mutated from humans, and Genlocks from dwarves?
Well, they're doing something similar with the Reaper-spawn in ME3. There will be types that were based on humans, Batarians, Krogans, etc.
