Has X-Men had the shittiest runs in the last decade?

Postby Chris » Fri Feb 24, 2012 4:49 pm

The Bendis/BC rumor thread got me thinking.. there have been A LOT of horrible runs on X-Men this past decade. Primarily on Uncanny, which is odd because that should be the flagship X-book.

But most of the quality in the X-verse has come from secondary titles, or a book like Morrison's New X-Men which became the flagship because of who was writing it.. or stuff like PAD's X-Factor or Carey's X-Men Legacy.

But Uncanny? Ugh.

We've gone through Chuck Austen, Chris Claremont, Peter Milligan, Matt Fraction, and Keiron Gillen currently.. and Joe Casey's run prior to Austen wasn't anything to write home about (at all) either.

What othere "big" book has had such horrible luck in this timespan? I honestly can't think of any..

I thought Claremont and Brubaker were pretty good.

The Claremont run where he turned Rachel Summers into a dinosaur? :?

I think the ideas in that run were good, but some of those issues were abysmal.

Brubaker was decent. I liked the Shiar arc, but the rest not so much.

You're completely right and the Bru and Claremont runs were both really bad, as well. It's been barely coherent for years.

I guess I missed that.

I didn't start reading it (since the mid-90s) until House of M tie-ins.

I don't think Fraction was particularly bad. Just dull.

Claremont had one great issue where he killed off the Grey family
that was tight

Johns' early run was good for several arcs when it began.

Not if you were familiar with Young Justice (and specifically, Superboy and Impulse) beforehand...

Right up until the Simone/Liefeld issues.

i think there comes a time in every comics readers life, mostly, more than any other book, where you simply....move past the X-Men. and you don't get anything that happens after that. you just don't. But it's different for every person. and no one thinks it will happen to them

It just gets too weird, too convuluted, too headache inducing,.

So some older folks, it's the new X-Men, or when Byrne left, or Wolverine became front and center, or when Magneto turned good, or archangel, or when they went to australia or Gambit/Bishiop/Cable

But i came in around australia and love all the shit before that, Australia, and Gambit/Bishop/Cable. I used to laught at those who complaiend it was too complicated. Ho ho, of course i understand Bishop's future, and Phoenix, and Madelyine Pryor, and demon Rasputins, and Cable's origin. and Mr. Sinister. and Apcalypse.

Sometime around the time that the Beast turned into a gay cat, and Magneto/Xorn, continuing into the third Summers Brothers, i think it was, i started to get a headache. which began to grow

and now every time I try to read the X-Men, I get a migraine.

and the ghost of X-Fans past whispher "we knew it would happen to you"
