We’ve actually spent billions in Afghanistan both the first time and this time on non military aid, reconstruction, schools etc.

The current government in Afghanistan is not being attacked by us. And it’s the non current government, the Taliban that refuses, even when it was in power, to provide basic education, medicine, etc in the name of their brand of fundamentalism.

And all the aid in the world hasn’t done anything about N. Korea.

Actually, just the opposite has been proven time and time again. The problem arises in how many people you kill. Machiavelli understood that. The Mongols did too. Now yeah, maybe not who you want to emulate, but you pays your money and takes your chances.

What HAS been proven is that if you kill ENOUGH people, problem solved. It worked out just fine for the Mongols and their Muslim problem, but then again their solution was killing absolutely everyone in an entire region, (you didn't fuck with them). That certainly makes sure you get the guilty parties. Of course you also get their cousins, neighbors, the guys down the street, in the next town, dogs, cats, and whatever else. Which we aren't willing to do.

So yeah, killing people absolutely works, but only if you kill enough of them. Otherwise, you're wasting your time and might as well go home.

(1) Chubbles didn’t say bombs work in certain circumstances, but not others. He said NEVER. Never is never.

So any example where force worked refutes his point. So actually good analogy.

And (2) of course our goal was to depose the Taliban government. And to prevent them from taking back power.

It is true that scorched earth policies won the Civil War and WWII

Has had much more limited success these last 70 yrs.
