Why Do Employers Feel They Have The Right To Your Cellphone?

Postby Benderbrau » Thu Mar 08, 2012 3:28 pm

So I get a call today on my cell phone while I'm at lunch from another department's manager about some meeting he wants me to attend and after we finalize that discussion he's like "Oh and by the way you should really have your cell phone listed with the company so that we can get ahold of you so I'm going to tell our department secretary to add it to the company listings" And I was like "Um...no you're not. This is my private phone, not the company's" and he was all taken aback by my response. WTF? Really?? It surprises you that I don't want you posting my private number, that I pay for with my own money, distributed to every Tom, Dick and Harry at my office so that they can reach me anytime, anywhere they want?

This is the first cell phone I've had. All the others were work cells. I hate carrying them because nothing I do is earth shattering critical that I must drop everything to deal with. I keep it in case of emergencies. I can count on one hand how many coworkers have and they don't abuse it but I would never post it on the directory at work.

Your response should have been then you need to get me a cell phone or just expense the bill you get.

It's ridiculous otherwise, I don't think I've worked for anyone in the last 10 years that hasn't supplied me with one.

u have a good point.

It sucks you had to point it out and they'll probably frown upon your non-compliance. Or maybe they'll get you a blackberry- who knows. Here- you have to request a work-cell and cite just cause.

personally, I make myself available when I work from home via call forwarding to my cellphone.

But your situation is different with public posting and all.

once my coworkers (mostly under me) got my cell # a couple years ago, they use it at all hours (usually early in the morning) to call out sick. I STILL get these texts.

I totally agree, but it depends on how much your job demands you be on call.

I get very few outside phone calls so I opted not to ask for one.

this is why I don't answer my phone unless the number pops with a name from my address book

and, even then, I usually don't answer, cause fuck that guy

basically, I'm not a people person.

also, its even worse when work texts you cause that is a charge you cannot decline, once a text is sent to your phone it counts, whether or not you wanted or accepted it.

Yeah but then, if they agree to my demand and give me a cell phone, then they really will expect me to be available 24/7

I refuse to load my work email on my phone until the company pays for it, but I will answer the phone outside of the office since my cellphone is the only way to contact me when I'm not at my desk.

It's a double edged sword, but, it sounds to me that if you've been able to get by without giving up your number then it won't be that bad.

I couldn't imagine not having my email on my cell anymore.

This is a fight with me and my company. They wil provide me with a cell BUT there's no service at my home. I'm not carrying two phones. I allow them some use but anytime it gets abused I raise bloody hell.
