At least now there's a bit of a differentiator between the 2.99 and 3.99 books.

Would have been cooler if it was a dl for a different issue at the purchaser's discretion.

I'd go for that. I bought an unopened copy of Avenging Spider-Man #1 so I could get the d/l code and see how it looks on my hubby's Nook just so I could make a value judgement on how they look digitally.

I think "doubling the value" is stretching it a little bit.

so are all the 4.99 books going to be poly bagged with individual codes or just a single download code for each issue. If the latter, what is to stop people from taking a picture of the code with their cellphones or writing it down, and downloading the digital copy for free?

I think the codes are hidden under a sticker.

I have three questions then:

1) How well does the reader work?
2) Are your comics stored in a cloud system or locally?
3) Do I have to damage my physical copy to obtain the digital copy?

It works okay. It's based off Comixology's reader.
You can access the comic either through chrome.marvel.com or Marvel's comic app (iOS or Android)
Just remove a sticker. For the early Avenging Spider-Man issues, the comic was polybagged and the code was inside the comic (sans sticker).

This was always my ideal scenario for digital comics...to have a digital copy as well as a physical one. Glad this came to pass.

Came across my first issue with the peel-off sticker qwhen I went to get them all in one shot: for some reason it had been sealed all around on my copy of Ultimates #7 and I had to resort to applying the slightest amount of citrus glue resin remover in order to loosed it up to get the peel started.

Annoying to say the least.

It didn't double the value, it's just their way to justify the higher costs. Another thing to pay for that we don't need. Just give me the friggin' paper comic at a reasonable cost.

There is value there though, instead of carrying around a collection with you when going on vacation you just need an ipad or a laptop.

And $3.99 seems to slowly be becoming the norm across most major publishers despite the "Holding the Line" campaign.

I can do all those things already though without any additional cost.
