I didn't see much of a difference in the damage between the Mattock and Vindicator. I was using the Mattock almost exclusively as soon as I picked it up, but it was heavy as shit and interfered too much with my Vanguard's Power Recharge. I had a zoom scope on it for accurate ranged fire, but realized, with a little trigger control, I can hit distant targets just as well without the scope.
I hated all the subguns in ME2, but I really kinda dig the Hornet. I had dismissed it as being just another shitty subgan, but loaded it with warp ammo, and it just eats barriers and shields. The first time it did that in combat, I was all, "WUT? Did that just happen?" So that's the subgun I focus on.
Shotguns...I like the absurdly tight grouping of the Spike Thrower. Was practicing with it in the Specter shooting range and was shocked by how accurate and powerful it is. But heavy. Which is why I gotta keep away from the Mattock's fat ass. The Disciple isn't nearly as tight as the Spike Thrower. Doesn't do as much damage, but it does stagger opponents, and it's so goddamn pretty. Both are great for post-Charge shots at point blank.
Pistols...ever since kirahee busted out with that Scorpion, I had to have one. It weighs more than some rifles and does more damage than most rifles in a single hit. But because it sticks an explosive charge on the target with each hit, there is a delay between the shot and the kill. With the scope, however, it becomes a long range monster. And then, there's the Arc Pistol, which does just slightly less damage than the Scorpion, but with a much higher rate of fire. Still heavy as fuck, though. But, you can charge up a single shot to get powerful one-hit kills on a some enemies.
