Waid on Civil War/AvX comparissons.

Postby BubbaKanoosh » Sat Mar 17, 2012 5:46 pm

A fan asked how Captain America – who normally tries diplomatic solutions – would be drawn into such a violent conflict with other heroes. "As a somewhat impartial observer...I buy your premise that Captain America is not really about punching if he can talk it out," Waid said. "Having said that, having seen [what's at stake], I totally buy the idea that this has to come to blows, and I credit the writers with pulling that off."

Another questioner wondered how the conflict of "AvX" matched up to the highly politically metaphorical conflict of "Civil War" to which Brevoort responded, "'Avengers Vs. X-Men' doesn't have that kind of conflict at the heart of it...but both Captain America and Cyclops believe that there's one course the world has to take, and those ideas are at odds with each other...Along those lines, it's very similar to 'Civil War' where we had the Cap side and the Iron Man side truly believing in what they were doing." Waid said that "Civil War" was about how society responds to heroes while "AvX" is more about heroes asking themselves how they best use their powers to impact the world.

Without seeing how it plays out, it's not really fair to compare. The heroes vs. heroes angle is a pretty basic premise.

Waid said that "Civil War" was about how society responds to heroes

I thought Civil War was about how horribly someone could produce an 'event'.

They are extremely comparable, in as much as I avoided Civil War like the plague and shall be doing the same with AvX.

That is a little harsh civil war had some good points to it, it was better than fear itself.

For as much as everyone online loves to bash Civil War (and now AvX, I guess) it still sold like bonkers, and everything points to AvX being one of Marvel's best selling events since then as well...

So either everyone just loves to torture themselves, and keeps buying these to have something to complain about, or there's actual interest in these and people who liked Civil War. :smt102

That's not saying much. Fear Itself was completely awful.

What I want to see is a full on marvel universe team up similar to secret wars. Outside of AvX most events have been family title cross overs.

However, it is fair to make comparisons on how this event is being sold. When one of your catch phrases is "Whose side are you on?", you're going to get questions as to how original this story is going to turn out.

Also, I have give Waid props for trying to sell this event on a deeper level then seeing the Avengers and X-Men fight each other in meaningless fights. I just hope that the themes he's talking about are present in a manner that doesn't make us roll our eyes.

Isn't that what every Marvel crossover is about anyway?

Yeah...

But Civil War was pretty good stuff. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Fun event. Great forum conversations. Crazy fanboys.

I'm not saying it was anywhere near perfect but watching the people burn Iron Man in effigy was hilarious. I even had to bite my tongue when going into a music shop when the subject came up.

Depends if the sight of firemen makes Cap cry at the end again or not.

All it's good points were conceptual or in tie-ins written by other people. Execution was horrendous from everyone but Marvel's marketing team.

It is similar but I find the motivations for the Avengers in this much more believable. The pro-reg heroes getting violent/preachy against the rebels felt really forced and false.
