I think the goop will be a kind of universal adapting element, one that triggers a species to dominate its environment, that both caused human adaptation to conditions on Earth in pre-history and at a later date xenomorph adaptation to their environment sometime after this film. And once exposed the crew of Prometheus are already going to morph themselves into something else meaning they can't go back to Earth.

I didn't actually watch the 2 1/2 minute trailer because I read it gives a lot more information away?
