I'm not understanding Sid Meier's Pirates

Postby Benderbrau » Thu Mar 22, 2012 3:43 pm

As anyone played this game? I got it yesterday based on all the positive feedback I've heard about it and it's either too easy or I'm playing it wrong.

When I started out I saw all these harbors with trade merchants that sell sundries and stuff and then I noticed that different harbors offered different prices so I thought "Oh it's like Wing Commander Privateer" and I started traveling between the harbors buying goods where they were cheapest and selling them where they were more and all the while evading all the other ships at sea for fear of being attacked.
Image

Then I learned two things: no one attacks you and winning ship to ship battles is easy. So instead of trading between ports I just started attacking ships which essentially amounts to nothing more then sailing directly at them until you collide and that triggers a mini-game sword fight battle between you and the opponent's captain. That's also easy. And once you've beated him you can loot his ship for goods thta you can then sell at any port because, well, who cares if it's not for the best price because it didn't cost you anything to buy it in the fist place. Oh and did I also mention that you can commandeer your opponents ship too. You can - and then you can either keep thereby adding it to your fleet or sell it for even more money.
Image

Then there are the infamous pirates like Black Bart, Blackbeard, etc. Not only are these guys as easy to beat as any other ship on the high seas but they yield you upwards of 50 times more gold. So far I've beaten only two of them, including Blackbeard and now I have more money then God and three 140 ton war ships in my fleet (the average ship is only 70 tons).

Something else about the fleets I don't understand: where are their stats? I can't seem to find anyplace that tells you how many guns you have on a ship except when your in combat. And when it does show it changes. So apparently my ships are getting more guns but from where and how I have no idea. :smt102

So, yeah, not seeing the challenge of this game. Attack ship, sword fight, pillage their goods, sell it, repeat - that seems to be the whole game. Fun but not challenging at all. So to anyone who's played this more, am I missing something?

I restarted three times and couldn't find where to change the levels. How do I do that?

I played the hell out of this game a few years ago. I hated the dancing though.

You're literally the worst thing to happen to comics since Stan Lee.

That's what everyone keeps telling me but after only one night I'm bored of it already 'cause it's so damn easy. I've beaten two of the most noterious pirates, got more money then I can spend and I'm like an Admiral for three different countries simply by beating the hell outta the Dutch - 'cause much like the Outhouse none of the countries in Sid Meier's Pirates like the Dutch (I scream "This one's for you RU!" after I sink each of them).

I dunno. There was something nice about getting a Ship of the Line as my ship and shooting a shit-ton of cannonballs at the other ships.

What system are you playing it on?

I like the CPU / X Box version the best with the chess like ground battles when you attack a port.

I've got it for Wii and iPad too. Still fun, but the originals are better.

It was a lot harder back on the NES, but the graphics and added mini-games of the current version can't be beat.

So far I've found that the Spanish Galleons are the biggest and they're all over the southern most section of the map.

I got it for the PC. I don't have an xbox and although I do have a Wii and a PS3 the Wii version was completely different and very bad from all reports and they never it for the PS3 unfortunately.

And did anyone else get the sense that Sid stole the design for your character from Guybrush Threepwood of Monkey Island fame?

The British have Ships of the Line. They are rare, but they are the best in the game.
