Johns and Frank make a really great team, and I really liked the fake-out where you’re led to believe that Billy Batson is some kind of perfect little kid, when he’s actually a much more realistic character. I know some people want Captain Marvel to be all whimsy, all the time, but I think this take works, it looks like becoming Shazam will be what teaches Billy to be good. In fact, the only problem I have with it is the name-change, which is out of DC’s hands in a lot of ways, but other than that, this was a fine start to me.
It just demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes Captain Marvel AND Billy Batson different from the likes of Superman and the rest of the DCU.
Billy was always the real hero and always played a larger role in the stories than either Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne. Even Ordway, whom I never thought was that great understood this, and Johns does not.
In three years this will not be in continuity, just like with Trials.
