Too bad, I actually thought the movie had potential.
And yes, the book The Running Man is quite good.
Just a small point in the defense of women, there are also plenty of "guy" films that are flat out stupid. There's shit like the Expendables which is simply a god awful movie.
HA! I never read the books, and after seeing the movie I kept thinking that reading the books first would have helped A LOT. I still don't know what they were fighting for. Do the people in the capitol have technology and the people in the far districts have none (or very little)? Was the arena an actual forest or a holodeck like on ST:TNG? Are the kids in the arena killed by other kids, or just by bad camera work?
After seeing the movie I wasn't sure if I liked it or not. Then I realized that I won't go to the sequels. That answered my question.
Agree with literally every word of this review. You took all the words right out of my mouth. Especially about the way the action was shot and the shaky cam, and the writing being dumbed down for the demographic.

They really don't explain how the arena works until the second/third books. It's kind of annoying because she doesn't flesh out the world very well.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but she does make it clear why they fight in the book.
I agree with topo's points. I hated the fact we only got one point of view because we knew right then she be the "survivor". The only thing I differ from Topo was that I get that even if she won this nothing would change. That Donald Sutherland's character would go to hell and high water to make sure her district wouldn't get shit for this. Also that was the point of the romance because people were "watching" and thus chose to root for her more. Hence Woody Harrelson's character last note calling her out on that being too lame a kiss. That it is all just staged, nothing more.
But yeah. The fights were lame and the "villains" never got a good showing. It was like everything was secondary and not even close to the main character.

I can't say it. It's too horrible. Zechs...is...not...wrong...
I'm unlikely to ever start giving a genuine fuck about the books or the movie. But if it helps usher more common household bitches into sci-fi and action flicks starring sexy bitches with big titties, I'm all for it.
With every woman who gets wet at the thought of seeing this movie, that's one less Rom-Com featuring Jennifer Aniston not getting nekkid that you'll have to sit through.
