Five Comics I'm Looking Forward To This Week: 3/8/2012

Postby LOLtron » Wed Mar 28, 2012 9:53 am

A look at the most anticipated comics coming out March 28th, 2012.

I thought a good way to kick Wednesday off would be to talk about what comics we're looking forward to the most this week.  Be sure to check back later this week to see if the comics lived up to the hype.

avx01) Avengers vs. X-Men #0

I'll admit that I have a bit of apprehension about this event, which (if the previews are to be believed) paints Cyclops as a villainous character, a path that the X-Writers have been pushing him down for the better part of two years. However, AvX is gearing up to be Marvel's biggest event since Civil War and this issue could a long way to either quell or confirm my fears about this summer's most hotly anticipated miniseries.

2) Walking Dead #95

Okay, I lied. I've already read this issue. But I can't wait to read it again. A Larger World is introducing a new community of survivors that is larger than the Governor's city of Woodbury. There's a lot of setup in this issue but it's interesting to see the contrast of Rick and his hardened band of survivors compared to this new group, which seems to have suffered a lot less hardship.

3) New Deadwardians #1

This month's new batch of Vertigo series have fallen rather flat for me. Fairest and Saucer Country were only alright and Dominique Laveau, Voodoo Child was one of the worst Vertigo comics I've read in years (probably the worst since American Virgin, in my opinion). Still, Dan Abnett is one of my favorite writers, even when he's not paired up with Andy Lanning, and I'm thinking that this is not your average zombie tale set in Victorian times.

jld74) Justice League Dark #7/I, Vampire #7

Okay, this might be a two for one deal, but I'm still excited to see what's about to happen in I,Vampire. With Andrew Bennett dead, there's no one to stop to the Queen of Blood and her vampire horde as well as a new threat that appeared at the end of last issue. Looks like it's time for Justice League Dark to step in! While Justice League Dark has been inconsistent and a bit of a mess, I, Vampire has been consistently awesome since it debuted. It's pretty disappointing to see the sales on this series drop, but it's not too late to give this book a chance! On a related note, what does the JLD call themselves? My vote is on John Constantine's choice of "A bunch of pissin' wankers."

5) Daredevil #10

Probably Marvel's finest series right now (especially with Uncanny X-Force's drastic dip in quality during the latest arc), this issue continues on the unlikely battle between Daredevil and Mole Man. One of the cool things about this series is how Mark Waid has been using a variety of Marvel villains not typically seen in Daredevil. Murdoch and his nemesis the Kingpin will eventually square off, I'm sure, but in the meantime, this has been a fun detour.

So those are the five comics I can't wait to read, what are yours?

I'm really glad to have passed on Dominique LeVeau if it's as bad as American Virgin (truly Vertigo's lowest ebb).

I'm really hoping it bounces back in the next couple of months. It's a book I should like, there's just some major technical flaws that ruined it (something that frankly shouldn't have happened considering Karen Berger is the editor of the book).

It definitely could have been a lot better. It has a bit of potential and I'm checking it out mostly due to my love for Vodou lore. But overall, it was a bit weak.

CountD: Greg, thank you for your insights.
Benderbrau: Greg: Unwrapping the riddles of the black man since 2006

Starlord: I swear if you were gay and I wasn't married we'd make the perfect fuck buddies.

Greg: I'd do many things. Coke is not one of them.
Benderbrau: Greg hates all things white.

Benderbrau: Emma, you could learn a thing or two from Greg. Greg does threesomes. That's bi done right.

Avengers vs. X-Men #0: Even though Fear Itself nearly killed me, I can't help but get excited about Marvel's latest mega-event.

Transformers Autocracy #6: The digital first comic has some pretty nice art and does a good job of showing the first spark of change in character for the Autobot forces. It turns out that the Decepticons rose up because the ruling government and the Autobots were total douches. Maybe this Orion Pax guy will change things...

Transformers: Robots in Disguise #3: While it's NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD as More Than Meets The Eye, RiD gets to play with political issues and ambiguous loyalties using some of the classic favorites from Generation One... and mixing in some newcomers to keep things interesting.

I'd fill this in with two randoms but this is kind of the extent of my buying list. For now.

I actually enjoyed the hell out of AV, all the way through to the end but every single one of these new launches (even Fairest) has been disappointing as hell. Closer in quality to Air really :(

I'm looking forward to not only AvX #0 but also Ghost Rider #9, which is the end of the title, and possibly the end of Alejandra's tenure as Ghost Rider. I'm also excited for the triple-threat of Avengers titles, especially Secret, is Ant-Man really dead?

And Giffen/Jurgens taking over Superman is also interesting, the Perez arc was very old-school and therefore divisive, but Jurgens is rightly seen as a Superman legend and I loved his work with Giffen on Booster Gold, so we'll see.

Walking Dead was awesome, that's about it for me this week.

Avengers vs X-Men #0 was lousy comics, just so dumb.

No but they've been turning up for $1 within a couple weeks.

If you must know, I spent all my petty cash on multiple copies of 2 recent comics still on the shelves that are selling for ridiculous prices online. :D

And you know I read Avengers vs X-Men in the shop, natch.

While I did not like the Alejandra's character or at least he back-story in becoming the Ghost Rider, I like the idea of a female character continuing the role.

I have not read up to the issue but the thought of Eric O Ant-Man dying could be shocking enough, but also gives Marvel room to put in a more respectable character into the role.

Considering that Air was better than 75% of the stuff Marvel and DC was producing in 2008 - 2010, then Saucer County #1 is starting in a better place than the majority of comics that come out of the Big 2 do. As for Voodoo Child, Christain/Bluestreak was right about Issue #1 being a mess from a technical standpoint, which hurts considering the whole damn package has the potential to be awesome.

If Voodoo Child doesn't improve fast, then it might just be worse than American Virgin.
