My Co-Worker Quits and I Get a Raise!

Postby Thor-El » Tue Apr 03, 2012 11:25 pm

Well one of my friends that had worked with me at Wal-Mart for the better part of 2 years quit on Sunday when I wasn't working and I just found out about it today when I returned to work from a couple days off. A few minutes after arriving at work this morning the Human Resources lady comes up and asks me if I had changed my "career preferences" and I said no I hadn't, and she told me I needed to go do so because I was getting moved to another job at a higher pay grade. My department manager also comes up and tells me that my vacation had finally been approved and I had 41 hours of paid vacation starting on April 26-May 1st.

I found this all very strange because me and my friend that just quit had been talking about quitting because the working conditions and attitude of our Assistant Manager had gotten so bad over the last few months. I went so far as to tell one of my superiors a couple weeks ago that I was actively seeking new employment because working there was making me miserable. I just knew that I had all the paid vacation time coming up and didn't want to lose that if I left. My Assistant Manager had rejected my vacations requests 4 times previously to her finally approving it yesterday.

I am just guessing that when my friend quit, and he was a really hard worker not a slack ass like some of the other employees in my department, that they knew we were serious. Again just guessing but I think they gave me the new position, raise, and approved my vacation in an attempt to keep me their, though I could be wrong and it just all be coincidence.

Sucks for my friend, and I will miss him, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't happy to get the raise and all the other shit. I just hope my bosses will recognize that you can't treat people like shit and expect them to take it forever.

Congrats and enjoy, because this kind of attitude doesn't last long, and soon enough will be back at the old level.

Clearly this means you need to start systematically eliminating all of your coworkers until you run the company.

Just because I don't know how to spell the language of some tiny African nation doesn't mean that I'm wrong in thinking that your attitude towards women is 100% wrong. Obviously, you're some skinny, single nerd living on the East Coast who probably derives value in life from wrestling matches, hoping that Wolverine gets to sleep with teenagers and engaging in casual drug use. You're literally the worst thing to happen to comics since Stan Lee.

Knowing how Wal-Mart works, I'll ask a simple question:

Does this "promotion" remove eligibility for overtime?

If yes, then you'll be expected to cover both your old job & your friend's old job

If no, then congratulations.

Unfortunately yes, that's why I am still not ruling out the possibility of leaving for a better job. If I leave now though it will have to be for somewhere that I will be making equal or greater pay than what I am making right now.

I don't know if the assistants attitude has changed as I haven't had to work with her yet since all this happened. My department manager was much nicer yesterday though, so that's a plus.

There are a few I wouldn't mind getting rid of.
