Read the first issue of Swamp Thing last night. Why the hype? That was boring.

Not sure I can make it all the way up to 8, but I'll try for the Zombie Review Group.

Swamp Thing #8 - Having just read this entire run in the past 24 hours, this was one of the lesser issues. Sure this is what the series has been building to, but from the limited amount of Swamp Thing I've read the concept doesn't touch on much of it's potential in the big giant fight moments. The beyond comedic Nu52 redesign of Swamp Thing makes it hard to take this issue seriously, armor, wings and... antlers? When high collars and knee pads just can't be done, antlers are clearly the most EXTREME alternative. Regardless of what didn't work for me in this issue, the previous 6 issues have me hooked. I feel invested in the characters and their stories and the art has been excellent in the Paquette issues and the fill-ins have done a nice job of maintaining a consistent tone.

I don't know if I'm totally sold on Swamp Thing's redesigned look this issue. His old look wasn't bad, so it's kind of a case of, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Having said that, I don't hate it, so I guess I can get used to it.

As for the events this issue, the big fight was done well enough, with Sethe's talking only through the corrupted forms of his followers giving an appropriately creepy feel to the whole thing. The big event this issue was, of course, the reveal of Abby's new form. As big moments go, it was really good and had the level of impact that you want. It also created a question of whether of not she can be saved at this point. If this was still a Vertigo series, I'd say yes, but this being the NuDCU and the overall changes that editorial seems to be making, I'm not so sure. In a lot of ways that sense adds to the impact, which is a good thing for the quality of this issue in the end.

This will get an 8 out of 10 from me.
