Young Justice should have been the DCnU relaunch...

Postby Doc Jon » Wed Apr 04, 2012 5:50 pm

Talk about getting the DCU right.

It's sad that this cartoon is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than pretty much anything DC puts out.

It actually treats the DCU with respect. Gets the characters right. Presents them in new ways without pissing on everything that's come before and could have easily been tweaked to be a linewide relaunch.

Oh DC... you make me sad.

Definitely enjoy YJ more than just about any DC comic I've read over the past 10 years. A few exceptions here and there. But still. If this was what DC comics were like, I might still be reading them.

I think the best example is Batman in YJ.

Yes, he's the hard ass we all know and love. He basically leads the Justice League and he's the strategist. BUT, there's actually a fatherly side to him in the series. This is something we don't see enough of from the character. And Superman has actually been a tool for most of the first season, which again makes him so much more interesting than the normal take on the character.

His reaction to Connor has simply been great.

I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE SEPTEMBER!!!!

And I'm still saying it. The problem presently is the NuDCU threw away too much and replaced some with total crap. Firestorm is total crap. Justice League is throwing too much away. Superman is a sorta but has some new stuff that is interesting.

Some of the books are really good but the cartoon universe is really so much better.

The trick was a simple one.

DC did this in 1986. They only changed what needed to be which was very little. The respected what happened before and kept it.

With YJ they're doing the same thing, but all smoothed out with hindsight. A few interesting tweeks in ages but otherwise... same thing as what was recently thrown away.

Moral of the story: when rebooting a property, write as if the audience are seeing it for the first time.

I've been saying for longer than "since September" that all the animated DC series from "Batman: The Animated Series" onward run rings around DiDio-era DC character portrayals.

And yes, I'M still saying that, too. :P
