I bought and read the first four issues off the shelf and returned them for credit a week later.

Your LCS let you buy them, take them home for a week, read them and then return them? Wow do they know that they're a lending library?

I do the same thing at my local comic shop. I take books in and trade them for other books all the time. The store credit they give me isn't as much as cover price but I still rarely pay more than a few bucks a month and read tons of comics.

My LCS does the same, and they also offer their "First Issue Guarantee": any issue #1, of any series you try, can be returned for full refund, no matter what.

I only go to Best Buy once a year but rest assured if I had to return something they wouldn't let me wait a full year to do so.
