Anime/manga are like North American TV/cartoons/comics... lots of variety and quality levels.

Bakemonogatari/Nisemonogatari was like a Vertigo comic in a number of ways.

Presently I'm watching Macross Frontier, Bleach, Naruto, D.Grey-Man and I'm waiting for season two of Gundam OO and hopping for a season three of Shakugan no Shana.

For manga, I'm very slowly reading Negima and Kurohime. I'm practically embarrassed to admit that I'm very far behind on reading those.

I figured, what the hey, maybe a thread like this covering those two subjects and their merchandise could go over here. Or not.

all my life i've been watching various mangas. i lost count of them:- Dragon Ball Z, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, pokemon, Yugi-Oh, Bey-Blade, Let's and go, digimon....etc

due to my mugen game, i've recently been interested in superheroes specifically. and i ignored manga for a little bit. now i've watched nearly every DC/Marvel animated Movies.

Here, they mostly played on YTV and they tended to place the more adult, language and situation based, shows on later times. CRTC has some rules on that, so they couldn't be played prior to a certain time of night anyway. I rarely watched as I was never a fan of the dubs, thought two or more weren't bad at all. (Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, Inu-Yasha) but I go for the subs. I also hated that the shows were butchered with on screen adverts. But I liked the fact that the stuff was on and making fans. Right now, I'm smiling at Topo's Evangelion thread for the love of it there and for Cowboy Bebop that's been mentioned.

I try to watch the original with subs as much as I can. However, I have watched and enjoyed a lot of dubbed things. Yamato (shamefully I never saw the series in Japanese), Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell SAC (& 2nd Gig), Samurai Champloo. I also never saw Kenshin in Japanese unfortunately.

The Japanese seem to have a different aesthetic for the superhero genre. I think (and I'm sure Cat will correct me) of the older stuff, Gatchaman was the closest to being a superhero type show. I haven't watched it yet but maybe Tiger & Bunny might fit the bill nowadays.

For my Japanese superhero fix, I go live action with the various tokusatsu shows.

They do. Other shows such as Tekkaman, Hurricane Polymar, the recent Tiger & Bunny are all considered super-hero titles. Even the now begun to air Zetman is in there. Wingman, the first manga I bought was a super-hero one. As SD said, the aesthetic is different and can in some ways be hard to describe. Even Saint Seiya, Madoka Magica, Shakugan no Shana, Mai-Otome and Mai-HIME could all be considered super-hero anime. The line can be blurry.

Funckygarcon, may want to check out Bleach and Naruto since you enjoyed Dragon Ball. In the end, it all depends on what you want. A prolonged series of fights, a quest series, a series about the growth of the characters, horror, horror-esque...

And yup, toku is live super-hero stuff.

I've only seen the Yamato movies and the more recent Resurrection in Japanese, otherwise it was all Starblazers. Heh, Captain Harlock I watched in French back in 1979. It played (along with a lot of other anime like Ulyses31) on French CBC. Cowboy Bebop, I've seen both sub and dub.

For myself, a good deal of the sub preference comes from spending so much of the 80s seeing it in raw Japanese. Subs came from the fans and then the commercial releases come the 90s. The past decade + is watching fansubs more then anything else as they tended to be the most available, the best priced and best done. That and often the only ones done or done completely. Saint Seiya is the great example of that as well as Macross and Gatchaman.

Ever seen Gatchaman II or Gatchaman F? Only in raw Japanese or fansubs.
Ever seen Macross 7 (series and movies) or Macross Frontier (series and movies)? Only in raw Japanese or fansubs.
Saint Seiya - Only the first animated arc - Sanctuary was licensed. And not completely. The rest of it... raw Japanese or fansubs only.

They played some (not all) of Captain Harlock here in Japanese with English subtitles. That was pretty cool.

I saw Cowboy Bebop raw, dubbed, then finally subbed. Spend many an hour trying to figure out what was being said in Macross Do You Remember Love, luckily I have some Japanese friends (who aren't geeks though so I had to only get parts of it) so I wasn't totally lost. Only saw the first Gatchaman, it was cool, but I wasn't that into it.

I had no problems with Macross DYRL in raw Japanese. Later, I had a synopsis in English. Nothing was really revealed that I hadn't figured out. Long talking parts were sometimes tough to guess at. But then, I had fan synopsis for most at the time.

This is one of the reasons why I like fansubs. They really only cover the worth while stuff. The really crappy stuff.. they never bother with or complete.

Mind you, sometimes you have to wonder. The last Giant Robo anime... not the one that was out in the 90s, was dropped by the one and only fansub group out there. I don't think it's ever come out here commercially. It did seem rather vicious an anime.

The parts I had problems with were Hikaru and Misa in the ancient city (I could figure out some of it but not the subtleties of it) and the detail of what Hikaru said to Minmay before her final song.

The city was some what straight forward I thought. As for the bit with Minmay, he was telling her that she was not the one for him.

x-posted in the tokusatsu thread...

One Piece's Luffy, DB's Goku Top Fuji TV's Anime/Tokusatsu Hero Poll
