I was reading some old Wolverines today and I saw a short story by a contest winner. No big deal, except I recognized the name. It was Jason Aaron!

What other examples of "Before they were famous" can you think of? I know there's been a few folks who got letters published by Marvel or DC years before they broke into the business and the whole Jim Shooter thing, but the details are a little fuzzy at the moment.

Also... why don't they do writing contests like that anymore?

Kurt Busiek was a letterhack before he broke in to writing, as was Geoff Johns. Also, Mark Waid got his start editing Amazing Heroes (which was like Wizard only good, for all you whippersnappers).
