So I see this guy fishing in a man made reservoir/lake the other days and I'm like "Is there actually anything to fish for here?" and he's like "Oh sure, the town fills it with fish every year" WTF? Is my tax money really being used to have fish imported just for people to catch them? And what purpose can that possibly serve? This sounds really fucked up

Happens all over the place. A lot of lakes are either man made, had their original ecology destroyed by development, or were actually dead lakes (just because water accumulates somewhere doesn't mean fish will find it). Parks departments have been filling them for decades.

Bird beat me to it. The fish have a role to play other then just provide a weekend/vacation pastime. Some of those lakes are also used for drinking water as they tend to be fresh water.

Yeah, they're not introduced just for fishing. There are actual ecological reasons for doing that.

Though it does remind me of the film Darwin's Nightmare, which is about the introduction of the Nile Perch to Lake Victoria in Tanzania, and the catastrophic effects on the local ecosystem (and economy, as well as human rights abuses) to facilitate dining on a delicacy in Europe. But that's a whole other thing.

And in instances when the 'feller is from out of State and just visiting the Nortland for the weekender, it's even more tax money.

True, but sometimes it was due because conservation wasn't around just yet. For some, it's literally a reclamation project for the fresh water.

That reason is also why frogs are sometimes added in too.
