Aside from his run how many PUnisher stories out there could be called "THe essential punisher story"?, and then how many of them would be filmable?

But that ain't puttin asses in the seats. No one cares outside of us fanboys.

I haven't seen War zone, but the words campy were used quite a bit in describing it with my friends (one of which actually read Ennis)

There were campy bits, but overall it actually did stay close.

As mentioned, the lighting was the biggest problem with that film.

If only Sony didn't own Spidey.

I think it may work better in a DD film though. 1. the grittiness and 2. to give some added 'starpower' to DD. It could be a very cool subplot.

Doesn't Fox own DD though?

Marvel needs to get all their characters back inhouse.

Ennis did two completely different takes on the Punisher: serious and comedic. Either works fine but to the best of my knowledge there has never been a serious Punisher movie, so maybe it's time to give that a try.

What do you mean there hasn't been a serious Punisher?

I don't see it happening anytime soon, but I wouldn't mind seeing Frank show up in a Captain America movie.

Better chance of it on HBO or FX than another film.

The Thomas Jane one was pretty serious. I don't think it was a good film or a good Punisher film, but it was serious.

When Jane opens the door and that over grown Waldo, Kevin Nash, is standing there - it got a little less serious. :D

Well, the costume was stupid, but the fight wasn't campy or anything. Again, I didn't think it was a good Punisher film or a good film in general, but they did take the material pretty seriously.

I think the problem is that - at least the Thomas Jane and War Zone movies - it almost feels like they're ashamed of the source material.

The Thomas Jane movie took itself seriously, but they didn't commit to it. It tried to be its own thing, while also taking some things from "Welcome Back, Frank" by Ennis like Spacker Dave, Joan, and The Russian.. etc.

War Zone felt like it wanted nail the Punisher MAX feel by Ennis, but then the lighting was straight out of Batman & Robin. It was silly.

It's been said time and time again, but look at a movie like Man on Fire. THAT was a Punisher movie.

It needs to be taken seriously, and just go all out. It shouldn't be a difficult concept. It's a pretty simple revenge story, and/or a vigilante movie. The fact that it has been done time and time again in Hollywood, with better results than any of the Punisher movies is kind of sad when you think about it.

I would love to see someone like Tony Scott tackle it in the same style as Man on Fire, with a completely unashamed head on approach.

If they took all the good parts of the TJ and War Zone movies and used them as guidelines, I think you could come up with a pretty good end result.

Somewhere between Man on Fire and Desperado is a Punisher movie that would rule all...
