C2E2 2012 Day Two Recap: Controversy Rules

Postby LOLtron » Sun Apr 15, 2012 1:31 pm

C2E2 2012 Day Two Recap: Controversy RulesWhile Marvel announced several new series, DC relied on controversy at panels to increase fan interest in existing ones.

C2E2 continued yesterday with several important panels, and The Outhouse has all the info you need.

Outhouse correspondent Zechs was on hand at the Marvel panel of his arch enemy, Dan Slott: The Amazing Spider-Man Panel. Zechs lined up an interview with Slott for today, where we expect to see Slott verbally and emotionally destroy him, but he also reported on the information released. We will see what's going on with The Lizard following Ends of the Earth in Amazing Spider-Man. Koi Pham will be taking over art on Scarlet Spider with issue #7, while Ryan Stegman moves to art duties on Fantastic Four with issue #609. The Savage Six enter Venom's life starting with Venom #17, which will be a good jumping on point for new readers and the culmination of a lot of what Remender has been building toward. Carol Danvers, the new Captain Marvel, will appear in issue #9 of Avenging Spider-Man.

Oh, and Spider-Men, the crossover between mainstream universe Spider-Man with Ultimate Spider-Man may be the start of future 616/Ultimate crossovers.

Zechs went on to cover more Marvel panels as well. The Avengers vs. X-Men panel is recapped here, and though there was no startling announcements or earth-shattering revelations, fans hungry for more details should check out the recap. He also visited the Marvel Animation panel with Jeph Loeb, and brought back a spolerific report on the two episodes previewed there: Ultimate Spider-Man Episode 9 and the episode of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes that will be airing tonight (in case you can't wait).

The big news out of Marvel came from the Cup O' Joe Panel, which Zechs also attended. Read the full recap here, or check out some of the individual announcements. For starters, Matt Fraction and David Aja will be working on a new Hawkeye series. Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi will pick up where they left on on Wolverine with Sabertooth Reborn. In anticipation of the Powers TV show (which is totally not cancelled really we swear), The Great One Brian Michael Bendis and The Other Guy With Three Names Michael Avon Oeming will be working on Powers FBI, another Powers series.

Believe it or not, Zechs had enough time and alcohol fueled vigor to visit one more panel, the IDW Panel, and this one was chock full of news and announcements! We got some information about the Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who crossover (it might feature a Captain Kirk cameo, interestingly enough), the new The Crow book coming in July, and a new KISS series from Chris Ryal and Tom Waltz writing with Jamal Igle, Casey Maloney on art. The KISS series is said to be more similar to the early Marvel KISS books as opposed to that Psycho Circus nonsense they put out in the nineties. No word yet on whether the ink will contain the real blood of Kiss (or their licensed impersonators).

Transformers #80.5 will hit on free comic book day, and will, similarly to the relaunched G.I. Joe: Real American Hero, restart the old Marvel Transformers series (though it will only run to issue #100). Mars Attacks will have FIFTY-FIVE covers, in a move that will single-handedly make up to the retailers all losses suffered from digital comics sales. Another Jericho series will be on the way, as the comics industry continues to fulfill the dreams of TV show creators everywhere by allowing their multi-million dollar television projects to be cancelled and move into the realm of comic books. JUDGE DREDD will be hitting comic shops in the fall, and the TMNT franchise will see a Casey Jones one-shot soon. For more details on all of this, please do read the full panel write-up.

While Marvel and IDW were busy, you know, announcing stuff, DC took to the All Access: Watchmen Panel to whip up a hurricane of fanboy butthurt. The panel was a masterpiece of carnival hucksterism, as Didio and the boys worked the audience like pro wrestling gods, particularly DC's top heel J. Michael Straczynski, who fired shots at Alan Moore that will no doubt result in awesome retaliation in the weeks to come. Read this reporter's very own writeup for all the deetz.

Over at their New 52 panel, DC explored the second wave of nu52 books coming up, including Batman Inc., Earth 2, World's Finest, Dial H, The Ravegers (a Teen Titans spinoff by Howard Mackie and Ian Churchill), and G.I. Combat (which will feature an Unknown Soldier backup by Justin Grey and Jimmi Palmiotti). The panel also discussed the Free Comic Book Day Nu52 title, which will set the tone for the next stage of the DCU. Geoff Johns revealed some plot details from Justice League and Aquaman, which Johns pointed out has outsold every issue of Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man, surely the best proof the world has yet seen that the Mayan Apocalypse at the end of this year is very, very real. The panel featured some other info on the Batbooks as well, but in typical DC fashion, there were no major announcements.

Meanwhile, Vertigo quietly announced a new series, Collider.

Stay tuned to the Outhouse as we cover the final day of C2E2!

DC relying on controversy instead of superior contene sounds like it is going the WCW route. If that's the case, Marvel will own it in a few years.
