Five Comics I'm Looking Forward To This Week: 4/18/2012

Postby LOLtron » Wed Apr 18, 2012 10:13 am

A look at some the most anticipated comics coming out this week!

I thought a good way to kick Wednesday off would be to talk about what comics we're looking forward to the most this week. Be sure to check back later this week to see if the comics lived up to the hype.

ra01) Resident Alien #0 – I was a bit surprised how much I enjoyed this comic. A story about an alien hiding in plain sight in small town USA, Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse deliver an excellent #0 issue which does a good job getting into the headspace of the title character and showing how he relates to the average human.

2) Batman #8 –Scott Snyder's run has been largely fantastic and it's all been building up to the Court of Owls event. How will Batman and his crew deal with a bunch of reanimated corpses with keen fighting abilities that rival even the Dark Knight? Who knows, but it'll probably be awesome.

3) Rocketeer Adventures #2The Rocketeer Adventures anthology are a great tribute to both the Rocketeer and his creator, Dave Stevens. Featuring stories from some of the industry's top creators, the series demonstrates how to do an anthology right. I was a bit disappointed to see the series not get nominated for an Eisner, as the quality of the comic was largely fantastic.

4) The Secret History of DB Cooper #2 – Written and drawn by Dave Churilla, the first issue was trippy, bizarre and fun. It's not too late to check out the series and enjoy figuring out what exactly is going on. Telling the untold story of the mysterious plane hijacker, Secret History reminds me of Casanova without the self-referential comic book and pop culture references. Give it a read and enjoy the weirdness!

p105) Punisher #10 – I was disappointed to learn that Mark Waid's Daredevil arc was crossing over into Avenging Spider-Man and Punisher, as I'm not picking up either book. The Omega Effect's first issue was pretty good, and Greg Rucka has a history of working well with Waid in the past.

Last Week's Comics

1) America's Got Powers #1: Solid issue, Hitch's art isn't quite back up to form, but it's getting there.

2) Batman and Robin #8:  Solid end to the first arc.

3) Saga #2: Fantastic issue.

4) Wolverine #304: A nice send off by Jason Aaron.

5) Secret Service #1: Wretchedly awful and boring. Avoid at all costs!

Yeah, that first issue of Omega Effect was good. Marvel should just fire everyone and let Mark Waid write everything.

Looking forward to Batman\Nightwing and Manhattan Projects this week, and Wonder Woman is presumably gonna be excellent.

Rucka's punisher has been great on its own though. I understand not wanting to get Avenging Spider-man, but you should be reading Punisher anyway.

GUYS! Wolverine and the X-Men #9 is brilliant this week. I know it always is but this week it very is. Also the art in Avengers #25 is brilliant (as expected) and the story isn't awful (surprisingly). All in all I regret reading Avengers vs X-Men #2 but not either of the tie-ins.

Ennis ruined Punisher for me. Even though I really like Rucka and his run is okay, all I can think when reading it is "Ennis did it better".

I was going ot buy Resident Alien but I'm glad I didn't, I didn't know it had a #0 issue. I'll probably get the trade.

For once I'm looking forward to a crossover! I'm already buying two of the three books, but mostly cause DD and Punisher have been really good!

I thought it'd be hard to come close to Ennis' run but dammit if Rucka isn't doing it. Or maybe it's just cause seeing Frank murder people makes me very happy. :P
