Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes 2.04: Welcome to the Kree Empire

Postby LOLtron » Tue Apr 24, 2012 2:20 pm

The Kree have sent an attack vessel to Earth! Good thing the Avengers got a new member just in time to deal with this threat!

Review:

After the teaser in the episode "459", we get a larger view of the Kree Empire as they send a vessel to judge if Earth is worthy to join their Empire. If refused, Earth is to be destroyed. Lucky for the Avengers they get some help in a new member, Ms. Marvel.

This episode continues to build off the episode I've mentioned and really that's all this episode is pretty much, story building. Again the massive Kree/Skrull story-line takes a massive step forward with the Kree showing up. Given Captain America is now a Skrull, a sworn enemy of the Kree you know the fire is almost lit on Kang's dire prophecy from Season One as well.

welcome4

I have to confess, I almost thought the choice that Kang spoke of would come in this episode. It does in a way with Captain America firing the first shot that results in Earth becoming a target for the Kree. However it isn't, given the slight tease later on in the episode with Kang glaring intently at the Avengers walking past him.

I do feel sorry for Captain Marvel though. He's put in a complete no-win situation here. The hero loves the planet he's lived on for awhile, however he knows they're just a gnat and could easily be swatted by his bosses. Yet, there's a great tragedy with the character here. The only thing I'm surprised about is that he didn't discard his Kree uniform at the end of the episode. Clearly the character is almost at midpoint in his hero's journey, which will come to whatever conclusion we see of it on the show. I just wonder that given what we've seen of him so far has been based on his Ultimate costume. Does that mean ironically, that if he does use his 616 costume it'll be a reverse homage of what Ms. Marvel is doing? An amusing thought to ponder for the future.

welcome1

Speaking of Ms. Marvel, we finally get to see her in full action in her actual superhero persona. It was interesting to see her power set of manipulating energy and the various ways she employed it. No doubt it'll be interesting to see her impact with the team in the long run. Though one nitpick I have to confess is well, Carol seems known as Ms. Marvel, thus I feel like we're missing some important information or a story here. I know there is an Avengers: Earth's Mightiest comic produced by Marvel. Was that covered in that comic? I get this feeling she adopted her Ms. Marvel identity after attaining her powers from "459" akin to that. That's why this doesn't really feel like a real debut. I feel like I'm missing something.

Nonetheless, the thing that really got me my inner nerd going was the appearance of S.W.O.R.D. in the episode with director Abigail Brand (who's given the perfect voice actor for the character in Mary Elizabeth McGlynn of Ghost in the Shell fame), liaison Henry Gyrich, and the various other supporting cast of the agency.

welcome2

The bickering between Brand and Gyrich throughout the episode was just golden. Also the depth the episode had of the organization was amazing. I know we'll probably never get them in the major spotlight again, but as a fan of S.W.O.R.D. I geeked out when Brand got her moment of awesomeness in the episode (okay she got like three).

As for the Kree themselves, no doubt fans were geeking out at their grand true entrance into this series, and more so for the heavy in the episode, Ronan the Accuser. Though, with all the various other characters such as Ms. Marvel and the S.W.O.R.D. members taking center stage, I feel like Ronan's impact was a little lost in the episode. And that's my big problem with the episode. This felt like a two part story crammed into one episode. The Ronan appearance could have easily been the end of part one and the impact of him could have been even bigger. Still, he did put up a real good fight in the episode.

welcome3

All and all, the bigger plot of the series so far, the Skrull/Kree war continues to move forward. The Kree now view Earth as a threat, the Skrulls have accelerated their invasion plans, and oh yes with that Kang teaser no doubt he has something to say about this all as well. Still, with so much movement on the alien fronts, I'm kind of hungering for actual forward motion by the good guys. The Avengers themselves still haven't a clue even when several big fat ones are thrown in their face with Cap's increasingly unusual behavior. We still haven't seen a hair of Nick Fury since he found out about the Skrull impersonators. Hopefully soon this plot point will be addressed.

This was another mostly weak episode. And Ms. Marvel is fucking awful.

This episode was held together by the awesome number of cameos: Ms Marvel, Gyrich, SWORD, Brand, Sydren, Ronan. It was fucking insane how many first appearances they squeezed into 20 minutes. My only problem was the thought of Ms Marvel taking out Ronan the Accuser. Clearly Ronan just isn't nearly as powerful in Avenger:EMH as he is in the 616 universe.

i liked this episode, i just wish Carol would be wearing the Warbird costume... it doesn't make sense for her to wear the costume she's wearing, since in the cartoon Mar-Vel never wore it.

i loved this version of Ms. Marvel.. but i don't get why she's wearing her original costume. She wore it originally to honor Mar-Vel, but Mar-Vel never wore that costume in the show..

Maybe in this universe she just liked the design. She did say that she took his name to honor him which makes one wonder if now that she hates him will she change her name to Warbird

This. I really enjoyed the use of Ms. Marvel in this episode but come on. She is a rookie hero in this show and Ronan was shown to be more than capable of dealing with the rest of the Avengers. If anybody should have been the one to defeat Ronan, it should have been Mar-Vell.

Which brings me to another point. I love how Carol was upset at Mar-Vell, who cares for and wants to defend Earth but is still a member of the Kree Empire. What did she expect?

That being said, I hope that the Avengers and the Kree can get their act together. There is a Skrull Invasion on the horizon!

Not yet. An invasion is defined as an incursion by a large armed force. Right now there are only like three Skrulls known to be on the planet so hardly an invasion.

I think they screwed up even more than that.

She took the Accuser down after he bitch slapped the Hulk.

They way overdid it with her.
