Disney Confirms Many Animated Movies For High-Definition Release In 2012

Lori MacPherson, Executive Vice President of Product Management at The Walt Disney Studios, recently declared the company's plans to release a variety of titles in its catalog on Blu-Ray throughout the rest of 2012, including many animated films. Two already solicited are Treasure Planet and Home on the Range, due for release on 7/3/12 for $29.99 MSRP. For Fall 2012, MacPherson says the public can expect to see Pocahontas, The Aristocats, The Rescuers, The Tigger Movie, and Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp's Adventure. Finally, Brother Bear and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were promised to be "...just in time for Halloween and the holidays,".

Disney to join animation initiative with China

Given that China restricts how many foreign movies get to their movie screens per year, it's the only way to gain greater access to the market.

I've recently seen a report on one of China's homegrown offerings; it's cute, but their industry could use some help. I kinda wish it wasn't happening in such a near-extortionist manner, though.

Yeah. They probably want to secure their position. Dreamworks has a tie to China now and Kung Fu Panda 2 was a pretty big hit there.

Posted this elsewhere but...

Wreck-It Ralph Crashes CinemaCon

Disney Animation and Pixar boss John Lasseter and actor John C. Reilly presented footage from their upcoming animated feature film Wreck-It Ralph at CinemaCon today. The movie follows the eponymous villain (voiced by Reilly) of an 8-bit video game who yearns to be a good guy. The Rich Moore-directed movie is a valentine to video games, including clever nods to everything from Donkey Kong to Halo.

Pixar Sets Dinosaur, Day of the Dead Films
Pixar Animation boss John Lasseter made some announcements about the studio's upcoming slate at yesterday's CinemaCon in Las Vegas. He announced two new projects at last year's D23 expo, one of which was an untitled dinosaur film. That movie now has a title: The Good Dinosaur.

Here's the official synopsis for the film, which opens May 30, 2014: "What if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? This hilarious, heartfelt and original tale is directed by Bob Peterson (co-director/writer, Up; writer, Finding Nemo) and produced by John Walker (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant).

Lasseter also formally announced Dia De Los Muertos, a new film slated for 2015 from the Toy Story 3 duo of director Lee Unkrich and producer Darla K. Anderson. It will delve into the vibrant Mexican holiday also known as the Day of the Dead.

Cool! I could always go for more Selick stop-motion animation...

Disney Digs Up The Graveyard Book

Walt Disney Pictures has just acquired the film rights to Neil Gaiman's Newberry Award-winning novel The Graveyard Book, which Coraline's Henry Selick will direct as a stop-motion animated feature. The hunt is on for a screenwriter.
