So I saw the Avengers (spoiler thread)

Postby Doc Jon » Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:30 am

Saw it earlier today.

I have a spoiler free review coming up, but I wanted to start a thread discussing the film and any spoilers if people were interested.

You have been warned.

That's not a spoiler.

I already knew that.

Hahaha.

Okay so for the record.

Mark Ruffalo vs. Ed Norton vs. Eric Bana who's the best Banner?

Is the Hulk really worth the hype everyone says he is? People are saying he steals the show?

Any Antman or Henry Pym references?

Villain at the end of the credits?

How does this Whedon film compare to the other Whedon films?

How does it compare to the other Marvel movies?

How does it do up against the other Super Hero genre films?

Anyone who sees this movie before me, especially a week early, is the scum of the earth.

I'd have to say Norton. Ruffalo is a bit underutilized here because there simply isn't time, so it's a bit unfair to compare him to 2 guys that had entire films. I think he does a good job for the time he's given.

Is the Hulk really worth the hype everyone says he is? People are saying he steals the show?

Depends. The animation on the Hulk is not great and I think they did it better in the Incredible Hulk. It does look like Ruffalo, though. Character-wise, the Hulk steals the show in the final 30 minutes and gets the best laughs in the film.

Any Antman or Henry Pym references?

Not that I caught.

Villain at the end of the credits?

I really don't want to spoil this at this moment unless people really want to know. I think it's a pretty big deal.

How does this Whedon film compare to the other Whedon films?

I think Serenity was the better film. The plot was tighter and the pacing was way better. It seems in the Avengers, that Whedon may have been trying to throw in too much and it ended up being a bit uneven at times.

How does it compare to the other Marvel movies?
How does it do up against the other Super Hero genre films?

I would say this depends on taste. I think that the plot for this was so bare bones that I don't know if it even cracks my top 10. There are moments in the film that are absolutely awesome, but all put together, it just doesn't feel very epic. I think films like Hellboy 2, X-Men 2, and X-Men (among others) are better.

Well, since I've seen this discussed in other places on the site, I guess I can reveal it here.

The mid-end-credits scene:

[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
We are back in the other dimension where the bad guys are from and they are talking about how the Earth will resist being ruled. All the while it is starting to focus on a character with his back turned to us. The minion says that trying to rule Earth is like courting death and the figure turns to reveal a comic book accurate Thanos in all his purple glory.

I don't know if I trust Jons judgment on the quality of the movie. I don't think I've ever seen a more inconsistent person when it comes to movies on here than Salwen.

I hope the movie makes a trillion dollars. I really do.

I just think that Whedon had a lot to do in the film and the final product suffers because of it.

Virtually every review I've seen says it is the best marvel movie yet.

Jon didn't like Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol and I thought it was really good.

So, if he thought it was ok then it's going to be great!!

Huh. Well, I hope people think that.

I think there are moments that are some of the best in any Marvel movie, just like I thought the first half of Captain America was one of the best Marvel movies ever made.

I don't know how that threadbare plot could be the best though.

I'm assuming the plot is... Loki and his army threaten the earth; Nick Fury assembles the worlds premiere heroes into a team in order to combat the threat.

The plot shouldn't need to be more complex than that. That's basically the Avengers origin.
