Oh how I've dreamed of this moment. At long last The Goon has finally been selected as the Review Group pick. I don't know who the other 4 are that voted for it in the poll because Jude has somehow made the public option completely not obvious, but I owe you guys handys... or maybe a comic with a chromium cover if you're insecure.

In order to try to compete with the gimmicks and rehashes of the Big Two superhero companies, Eric Powell has decided to completely sell out and relaunch the Goon in this super-epic, brand new, first-ever first edition of the 39th issue of The Goon! Not only do the Goon and Franky get new costumes, but we also discover there are different-colored versions of the Goon! Green Goon! Red Goon! Blue Goon! Purple Goon! WHAT A PLOT!

The Goon #39 (Dark Horse)

While comics fans go round and round in circles over the latest Alan Moore or Chris Roberson flap, this almost ridiculously timely lampooning of the mainstream American comics business and its candy-colored super-clowns will probably fly almost entirely under the radar. Which is too bad, because it's a funny and beautifully drawn lampooning too, and also entirely accessible even if you've never heard of The Goon before.

There's an insightful essay by creator Eric Powell too, titled "Where is our Harry Potter?", that expands on the criticisms of Marvel & DC being acted out by Franky and The Goon in the book itself and dispels the argument that their gimmicks and cash-grabs are good for the long-term health of the art-form just because they sell more comics.

Everything is pitch perfect here, while Powell is admittedly preaching to the choir where my sensibilities are concerned. After all I spent nearly $200 on comics and comics creators last weekend who are each trying, in their own way, to do exactly what Powell is talking about, to help create a much richer and rewarding future for comics with opportunities for creators outside superhero comics.

Like the best satirists, Powell's frustration with the status quo sharpens his keen wit, to eviscerate the industry's sacred cows.
